The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 9
1For there is no gloom for her who was in anguish.
In the former time he brought contempt upon the land of Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali,
but in the latter time he has made glorious
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2The people who walk in darkness
have seen a great light;
those dwelling in the land of the shadow of death,
light has shone upon them.
3You have multiplied the nation;
for it You have multiplied the joy.
They rejoice before You as the rejoicing in the harvest,
as when they exult at their dividing of spoil.
4For the yoke of his burden,
and the rod of his shoulder,
the staff of the one who drives him,
You have shattered, as in the day of Midian.
5For every boot of the one who tramples with tumult,
and the garment rolled in blood,
shall be for burning, fuel of fire.
6For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us,
and the dominion is upon his shoulder,
and his name is called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7Of the increase of the dominion
and of peace there is no end,
upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom,
to establish it and to sustain it
with justice and with righteousness,
from now and until forever.
The zeal of YHWH of hosts shall do this.
8A word the Lord has sent against Jacob,
and it has fallen upon Israel.
9And the people shall know, all of them,
Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria,
in pride and in greatness of heart, saying:
10"Bricks have fallen,
but with hewn stone we shall build;
sycamores have been cut down,
but with cedars we shall replace them."
11And YHWH has raised up the adversaries of Rezin against him,
and his enemies He stirs up,
12Aram from the east and Philistines from behind,
and they devour Israel with every mouth.
For all this His anger is not turned back,
and still His hand is stretched out.
13And the people have not turned back
to the One who strikes them,
and YHWH of hosts they have not sought.
14And YHWH cut off from Israel
head and tail, palm branch and reed,
in one day.
15The elder and the one honored of face, he is the head;
and the prophet who teaches falsehood, he is the tail.
16And those who guide this people have become ones who lead astray,
and those guided by them are swallowed up.
17Therefore over his young men the Lord will not rejoice,
and upon his orphans and his widows He will not have compassion,
for every one is godless and an evildoer,
and every mouth speaks wickedness.
For all this His anger is not turned back,
and still His hand is stretched out.
18For wickedness has burned like fire;
brier and thorn it devours,
and it has kindled in the thickets of the forest,
and they swirl upward in columns of smoke.
19Through the wrath of YHWH of hosts the land is scorched,
and the people have become like fuel of fire;
each man against his brother, they will not spare.
20And he tears at the right and is hungry,
and he eats at the left and they are not satisfied;
each man the flesh of his arm they devour,
21Manasseh — Ephraim, and Ephraim — Manasseh;
together they are against Judah.
For all this His anger is not turned back,
and still His hand is stretched out.
