The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 21
1Burden of the wilderness of the sea.
Like storm-winds in the Negev sweeping through,
from the wilderness it comes,
from a terrible land.
2A harsh vision has been declared to me:
"The treacherous one deals treacherously,
and the destroyer destroys.
Go up, Elam!
Besiege, Media!
All her groaning I have caused to cease."
3Therefore my loins are filled with anguish;
pangs have seized me
like the pangs of a woman in labor.
I am bent from hearing;
I am terrified from seeing.
4My heart staggers;
horror has terrified me.
The twilight of my delight
He has turned for me into trembling.
5Set the table!
Spread the covering!
Eating! Drinking!
Arise, princes!
Anoint the shield!
6For thus the Lord said to me:
"Go! Station the watchman,
whatever he sees, let him declare."
7And he sees riders — a pair of horsemen,
riders on a donkey, riders on a camel,
and let him attend with much attention.
8And he cried out like a lion:
"Upon the watchtower, O Lord,
I stand continually by day,
and upon my watch-post
I am stationed all the nights."
9And behold, this comes:
riders, a man, a pair of horsemen!
And he answered and said:
"Fallen, fallen is Babylon!
And all the carved images of her gods
He has shattered to the ground."
10O my threshed one
and son of my threshing floor,
that which I have heard
from YHWH of hosts, God of Israel,
I have declared to you.
THE BURDEN OF DUMAH (21:11–12)
11Burden of Dumah.
To me one calls from Seir:
"Watchman, what of the night?
Watchman, what of the night?"
12The watchman said:
"Morning comes,
and also night.
If you would inquire — inquire!
Come back! Come!"
THE BURDEN IN ARABIA (21:13–17)
13Burden in Arabia.
In the thicket in Arabia you lodge,
O caravans of the Dedanites!
14To meet the thirsty one, bring water!
O inhabitants of the land of Tema,
with his bread come to meet the fugitive!
15For from before swords they have fled,
from before a drawn sword,
and from before a bent bow,
and from before the heaviness of war.
16For thus the Lord said to me:
"Within a year,
like the years of a hired worker,
all the glory of Kedar shall come to an end."
17And the remnant of the number of the bow,
the mighty ones of the sons of Kedar,
shall be few.
For YHWH, God of Israel, has spoken.
