The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 34
1Draw near, nations, to hear!
And peoples, pay attention!
Let the earth and its fullness hear,
the world and all its offspring.
2For wrath belongs to YHWH upon all the nations,
and fury upon all their host.
He has devoted them to destruction;
He has given them to the slaughter.
3And their slain shall be cast out,
and their corpses — their stench shall rise,
and the mountains shall melt from their blood.
4And all the host of the heavens shall waste away,
and the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll,
and all their host shall fall,
like a leaf falling from the vine,
and like a fig falling from the fig tree.
5For my sword has been saturated in the heavens,
behold, upon Edom it shall descend,
and upon the people of my devoted destruction, for judgment.
6A sword belonging to YHWH, filled with blood,
fattened with fat,
from the blood of lambs and goats,
from the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For a sacrifice belongs to YHWH in Bozrah,
and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7And wild oxen shall come down with them,
and bulls with mighty ones.
And their land shall be saturated with blood,
and their dust with fat shall be fattened.
8For a day of vengeance belongs to YHWH,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9And her streams shall be turned into pitch,
and her dust into brimstone,
and her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day it shall not be quenched;
forever her smoke shall rise.
From generation to generation it shall lie waste;
forever and ever — there is no one passing through it.
11And the pelican and hedgehog shall possess it,
and the owl and raven shall dwell in it.
And He shall stretch out upon it a measuring-line of formlessness,
and stones of emptiness.
12Her nobles, but there is no kingship there to proclaim,
and all her princes shall become nothing.
13And thorns shall come up in her palaces,
nettles and thistles in her fortresses.
And it shall become a habitation of jackals,
an enclosure for the daughters of the ostrich.
14And desert creatures shall meet jackals,
and wild goat upon its companion shall call.
Surely there Lilith has settled,
and has found for herself a resting-place.
15There the arrow-snake has nested,
and lays eggs and hatches,
and broods in her shadow.
Surely there kites have gathered,
each one with her companion.
16Seek from the scroll of YHWH and read!
Not one of these shall be missing,
each one her companion they shall not lack.
For His mouth — He has commanded,
and His spirit — He has gathered them.
17And He has cast the lot for them,
and His hand has divided it to them by the measuring-line.
Forever they shall possess it;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.
