The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 10
1Woe! Those who decree decrees of iniquity,
and those who write — oppression they write,
2to turn aside from the cause the poor,
and to rob justice from the afflicted of my people,
so that widows become their spoil,
and orphans they plunder.
3And what will you do for the day of visitation,
and for the devastation from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
and where will you leave your glory?
4Nothing remains but to bow down among captives,
and among the slain they shall fall.
For all this His anger is not turned back,
and still His hand is stretched out.
5Woe, Assyria, rod of my anger!
And the staff in their hand is my indignation.
6Against a godless nation I send him,
and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take spoil and to seize plunder,
and to make him a trampling like the mud of the streets.
7But he does not so think,
and his heart does not so plan,
for to destroy is in his heart,
and to cut off nations not a few.
8For he says: "Are not my princes altogether kings?
9Is not Calno like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad?
Is not Samaria like Damascus?
10As my hand has reached the kingdoms of the worthless thing,
and their carved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and to her worthless things,
so do to Jerusalem and to her idols?"
12And it shall come to pass, when the Lord completes all His work
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
I will punish the fruit of the greatness of heart
of the king of Assyria,
and the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.
13For he has said: "By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I am discerning;
and I remove the boundaries of peoples,
and their treasures I have plundered,
and I bring down like a mighty one those who sit on thrones.
14And my hand found like a nest the wealth of the peoples,
and as one gathers eggs that are forsaken,
all the earth I have gathered;
and there was not one who moved a wing,
or opened a mouth, or chirped."
15Does the axe boast over the one who chops with it?
Does the saw magnify itself over the one who wields it?
As if a rod should wield those who raise it!
As if a staff should lift up that which is not wood!
16Therefore the Lord, YHWH of hosts, will send
among his fat ones leanness,
and instead of his glory will be kindled a burning,
like the burning of fire.
17And the Light of Israel shall become a fire,
and his Holy One a flame,
and it shall burn and devour
his thorns and his briers in one day.
18And the glory of his forest and his fruitful field,
from soul to flesh, He will consume,
and it shall be like a wasting one who wastes away.
19And the remnant of the trees of his forest
shall be few in number,
and a child could write them.
20And it shall come to pass in that day,
the remnant of Israel and the escaped ones of the house of Jacob
will no longer lean upon the one who strikes him,
but will lean upon YHWH, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21A remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob,
to the Mighty God.
22For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea,
a remnant shall return from it.
Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
23For a complete end and a determination
the Lord, YHWH of hosts, is bringing about
in the midst of all the earth.
24Therefore thus says the Lord, YHWH of hosts:
"Do not fear, my people who dwell in Zion,
of Assyria — with the rod he strikes you,
and his staff he lifts up against you in the manner of Egypt.
25For yet a very little while,
and the indignation is ended,
and my anger — upon their destruction."
26And YHWH of hosts will brandish a scourge against him,
as in the striking of Midian at the rock of Oreb;
and His staff over the sea,
and He will lift it up in the manner of Egypt.
27And it shall come to pass in that day,
his burden will depart from upon your shoulder,
and his yoke from upon your neck,
and the yoke will be destroyed because of fatness.
28He has come upon Aiath,
he has passed through Migron;
at Michmash he stores his equipment.
29They have crossed the pass;
"Geba is a lodging-place for us."
Ramah trembles;
Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30Cry shrilly with your voice, daughter of Gallim!
Give attention, Laishah!
Afflicted Anathoth!
31Madmenah has fled;
the inhabitants of Gebim gather for flight.
32Yet today at Nob he will halt;
he shakes his fist at the mountain of daughter Zion,
the hill of Jerusalem.
33Behold! The Lord, YHWH of hosts,
is lopping the boughs with terrifying power,
and the tall of stature are hewn down,
and the lofty shall be brought low.
34And He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron,
and Lebanon shall fall by the Majestic One.
