The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 17

1Burden of Damascus:
Behold, Damascus is removed from being a city,
and it shall become a heap of ruin.
2Abandoned are the cities of Aroer,
for the flocks they shall be,
and they shall lie down,
and there is none who disturbs.
3And the fortress shall cease from Ephraim,
and the kingdom from Damascus;
and the remnant of Aram,
like the glory of the sons of Israel they shall be,
declares YHWH of hosts.
4And it shall be in that day,
the glory of Jacob shall be brought low,
and the fatness of his flesh shall become lean.
5And it shall be like the gathering of a reaper of standing grain,
and his arm reaps ears of grain,
and it shall be like one who gleans ears of grain
in the Valley of Rephaim.
6And there shall remain in it gleanings,
like the beating of an olive tree,
two, three berries
on the top of the topmost bough,
four, five
on its fruitful branches,
declares YHWH, the God of Israel.
7In that day the human shall look to his Maker,
and his eyes toward the Holy One of Israel shall see.
8And he shall not look to the altars,
the work of his hands;
and what his fingers have made
he shall not regard,
the Asherim and the incense-stands.
9In that day the cities of his stronghold shall be
like the abandonment of the forest and the hilltop,
which they abandoned from before the sons of Israel,
and it shall be a desolation.
10For you have forgotten the God of your salvation,
and the Rock of your refuge you did not remember;
therefore you plant plantings of pleasant things,
and a slip of a foreign one you sow.
11On the day of your planting you make it grow,
and in the morning your seed you make blossom,
a heap of harvest
on the day of sickness
and incurable pain.
12Woe! The roar of many peoples,
like the roaring of the seas they roar!
And the rushing of nations,
like the rushing of mighty waters they rush!
13Nations — like the rushing of many waters they rush,
but He rebukes him, and he flees to a distance,
and is chased
like chaff of the mountains before the wind,
and like tumbleweed before a storm.
14At the time of evening, and behold, terror!
Before morning, he is not.
This is the portion of those who plunder us,
and the lot of those who despoil us.
