The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 13
1The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah son of Amoz saw.
2Upon a bare mountain lift up a signal,
raise voice to them,
wave the hand,
and let them enter the entrances of nobles.
3I, I have commanded my consecrated ones,
I have also called my mighty ones for my anger,
the ones exulting in my majesty.
4A sound of a multitude in the mountains,
a likeness of a great people,
a sound of uproar of kingdoms,
nations being gathered,
YHWH of hosts is mustering a host of war.
5Coming from a land of distance,
from the end of the heavens,
YHWH and the weapons of his indignation,
to destroy all the earth.
6Wail! For near is the Day of YHWH,
like destruction from the Almighty it shall come.
7Therefore all hands shall go slack,
and every heart of mortal shall melt.
8And they shall be terrified,
pangs and birth-pains shall seize them,
like a woman in labor they shall writhe;
each at his neighbor they shall be astounded,
faces of flames are their faces.
9Behold, the Day of YHWH is coming,
cruel, and overflowing wrath and burning of anger,
to make the earth a desolation,
and its sinners he shall destroy from it.
10For the stars of the heavens and their constellations
shall not flash forth their light;
the sun is dark in its going forth,
and the moon shall not make bright its light.
11And I will visit upon the world evil,
and upon the wicked their iniquity;
and I will cause the pride of the arrogant to cease,
and the majesty of the ruthless I will bring low.
12I will make mortal more rare than fine gold,
and man than the gold of Ophir.
13Therefore heavens I will cause to tremble,
and the earth shall quake from its place,
in the overflowing wrath of YHWH of hosts,
and in the day of the burning of his anger.
14And it shall be like a gazelle driven away,
and like sheep with none gathering,
each to his people they shall turn,
and each to his land they shall flee.
15Everyone who is found shall be pierced through,
and everyone who is swept up shall fall by the sword.
16And their infants shall be dashed to pieces
before their eyes;
their houses shall be plundered,
and their wives shall be lain with.
17Behold me, stirring up against them the Medes,
who silver they do not value,
and in gold they do not delight.
18And bows shall dash young men to pieces,
and on the fruit of the womb they shall have no compassion;
on sons their eye shall not spare.
19And Babylon — the beauty of kingdoms,
the splendor of the pride of the Chaldeans,
shall become like the overthrow of God
of Sodom and Gomorrah.
20She shall not be inhabited forever,
and she shall not be dwelt in unto generation and generation;
and no Arab shall pitch tent there,
and shepherds shall not make flocks lie down there.
21And desert creatures shall lie down there,
and their houses shall be full of howling creatures;
and daughters of the ostrich shall dwell there,
and wild goats shall dance there.
22And jackals shall howl in its palaces,
and jackals in the palaces of delight;
and near to come is her time,
and her days shall not be prolonged.
