The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 31

1Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help!
Upon horses they lean,
and they trust upon chariots because they are many,
and upon horsemen because they are very strong,
and they do not look to the Holy One of Israel,
and YHWH they do not seek.
2And also He is wise,
and He brings calamity,
and His words He does not retract.
And He rises against the house of evildoers,
and against the help of workers of iniquity.
3And Egypt is man and not God,
and their horses are flesh and not spirit.
And YHWH stretches out His hand,
and the helper stumbles,
and the helped one falls,
and together all of them perish.
4For thus says YHWH to me:
Just as the lion and the young lion growl over his prey,
when a fullness of shepherds is called against him,
by their voice he is not dismayed,
and by their tumult he is not humbled,
so YHWH of hosts comes down
to wage war upon Mount Zion and upon its hill.
5Like birds hovering,
so YHWH of hosts protects over Jerusalem,
protecting and delivering,
passing over and rescuing.
6Return to Him from whom they have deeply revolted,
O sons of Israel!
7For in that day each man will reject
the worthless things of his silver
and the worthless things of his gold,
which your hands made for you — sin.
8And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of man,
and a sword not of man shall devour him.
And he flees for himself from before the sword,
and his young men shall become forced labor.
9And his rock passes away from terror,
and his princes are dismayed from the banner,
declares YHWH,
whose fire is in Zion
and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
