The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 40

1Comfort, comfort my people,
says your God.
2Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, and proclaim to her,
that her warfare is fulfilled,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the hand of YHWH
double for all her sins.
3A voice crying:
In the wilderness prepare the way of YHWH;
make straight in the desert-plain a highway for our God.
4Every valley shall be raised up,
and every mountain and hill shall be brought low;
and the rugged ground shall become level ground,
and the rough places a plain.
5And the glory of YHWH shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see together,
for the mouth of YHWH has spoken.
6A voice saying, "Proclaim!"
And one says, "What shall I proclaim?"
All the flesh is grass,
and all its loyalty like a flower of the field.
7The grass withers, the flower fades,
for the breath of YHWH blows upon it.
Surely the people is grass.
8The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God shall stand forever.
9Upon a high mountain get yourself up,
O Zion, bearer of good tidings;
raise with strength your voice,
O Jerusalem, bearer of good tidings;
raise, do not fear!
Say to the cities of Judah: Behold your God!
10Behold, the Lord YHWH comes with might,
and His arm rules for Him.
Behold, His reward is with Him,
and His recompense before Him.
11Like a shepherd His flock He feeds;
in His arm He gathers lambs,
and in His bosom He carries;
nursing ewes He leads gently.
12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
and marked off the heavens with a span,
and contained in a measure the dust of the earth,
and weighed the mountains in a balance,
and the hills in scales?
13Who has directed the spirit of YHWH,
or as the man of His counsel instructs Him?
14With whom did He take counsel, and he gave Him understanding,
and taught Him in the path of justice,
and taught Him knowledge,
and the way of understanding made known to Him?
15Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
and like dust on the scales are reckoned.
Behold, the coastlands He lifts like fine dust.
16And Lebanon is not sufficient for fuel,
and its beasts are not sufficient for a burnt offering.
17All the nations are as nothing before Him;
as less than nothing and emptiness they are reckoned to Him.
18And to whom will you liken God,
and what likeness will you set up for Him?
19The idol — a craftsman casts it,
and a goldsmith overlays it with gold,
and chains of silver a smith forges.
20He who is too poor for an offering,
wood that does not rot he chooses;
a skilled craftsman he seeks for himself,
to set up an idol that will not totter.
21Do you not know? Do you not hear?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22He who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to dwell in,
23who brings rulers to nothing,
judges of the earth He makes as emptiness.
24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely are they sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when also He blows upon them, and they wither,
and a storm-wind carries them away like stubble.
25"And to whom will you liken me, that I should be equal?"
says the Holy One.
26Lift up your eyes on high and see,
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
to all of them by name He calls,
because of the greatness of might and the strength of power,
not one is missing.
27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel:
"My way is hidden from YHWH,
and my justice passes by my God"?
28Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, YHWH, the creator of the ends of the earth,
does not faint and does not grow weary;
there is no searching out His understanding.
29He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might He multiplies abundant strength.
30And youths faint and grow weary,
and young men utterly stumble.
31But those who wait for YHWH shall renew strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not grow weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
