The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 49

1Listen, O coastlands, to me,
and pay attention, O peoples from afar!
YHWH called me from the womb;
from the bowels of my mother He named me.
2And He made my mouth like a sharp sword;
in the shadow of His hand He hid me.
And He made me into a polished arrow;
in His quiver He concealed me.
3And He said to me,
"You are my servant, Israel,
in whom I will be glorified."
4And I said,
"In vain I have labored;
for emptiness and vanity I have spent my strength."
Surely my cause is with YHWH,
and my recompense is with my God.
5And now says YHWH,
the one who formed me from the womb to be a servant to Him,
to bring Jacob back to Him,
though Israel is not gathered,
yet I am honored in the eyes of YHWH,
and my God has been my strength,
6and He said, "It is too light a thing
that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and the preserved of Israel to restore.
I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."
7Thus says YHWH, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One,
to the one despised of soul,
to the one abhorred by a nation,
to the servant of rulers:
Kings shall see and arise,
princes, and they shall bow down,
for the sake of YHWH, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.
8Thus says YHWH:
In a time of favor I have answered you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.
And I will preserve you
and give you as a covenant to the people,
to restore the land,
to cause the desolate inheritances to be inherited,
9saying to the prisoners, "Go out!"
to those in darkness, "Show yourselves!"
Upon the roads they shall feed,
and on all bare heights shall be their pasture.
10They shall not hunger, and they shall not thirst;
burning heat and sun shall not strike them.
For the one having compassion on them shall lead them,
and to springs of water He shall guide them.
11And I will make all my mountains into a road,
and my highways shall be raised up.
12Behold, these shall come from afar,
and behold, these from the north and from the west,
and these from the land of Sinim.
13Sing for joy, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth!
Let the mountains break forth in singing!
For YHWH has comforted His people,
and His afflicted ones He will have compassion on.
14But Zion said,
"YHWH has forsaken me,
and my Lord has forgotten me."
15Can a woman forget her nursing child,
from having compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
but I will not forget you!
16Behold, upon the palms of my hands I have engraved you;
your walls are before me continually.
17Your sons hasten;
your destroyers and those who laid you waste
shall depart from you.
18Lift up your eyes all around and see!
All of them have gathered; they have come to you.
"As I live," declares YHWH,
"surely all of them you shall put on like an ornament,
and you shall bind them on like a bride."
19For your ruins and your desolate places
and the land of your destruction,
indeed now you shall be too narrow for inhabitants,
and those who swallowed you shall be far away.
20Yet the children of your bereavement
shall say in your ears,
"The place is too narrow for me;
make room for me, that I may dwell!"
21And you shall say in your heart,
"Who bore these for me?
I was bereaved and barren,
exiled and put away,
and these, who raised them?
Behold, I was left alone,
these, where are they from?"
22Thus says the Lord YHWH:
Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations,
and to the peoples I will raise my banner.
And they shall bring your sons in the bosom,
and your daughters upon the shoulder shall be carried.
23And kings shall be your foster fathers,
and their queens your nursing mothers.
With faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,
and the dust of your feet they shall lick.
And you shall know that I am YHWH;
those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.
24Can prey be taken from a warrior?
Or can the captives of a tyrant escape?
25For thus says YHWH:
Even the captives of a warrior shall be taken,
and the prey of a tyrant shall escape.
And with those who contend with you I will contend,
and your children I will save.
26And I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
and like sweet wine on their own blood
they shall become drunk.
And all flesh shall know
that I am YHWH, your Savior,
and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
