The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 38

1In those days Hezekiah was sick unto death. And Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet came to him, and said to him: "Thus says YHWH: 'Set your house in order, for you are dying, and you shall not live.'"
2And Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and he prayed to YHWH.
3And he said: "Please, YHWH, remember, please, that I walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and the good in your eyes I have done." And Hezekiah wept a great weeping.
4And the word of YHWH came to Isaiah, saying:
5"Go and say to Hezekiah: 'Thus says YHWH, God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. Behold, I am adding to your days fifteen years.
6And from the hand of the king of Assyria I will deliver you and this city. And I will defend this city.'"
7"And this is the sign for you from YHWH, that YHWH will do this thing which He has spoken:
8Behold, I am bringing back the shadow of the steps which has gone down on the steps of Ahaz by the sun, backward, ten steps." And the sun returned ten steps on the steps on which it had gone down.
9A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah,
when he was sick and recovered from his sickness:
10I, I said:
"In the cutting off of my days
I shall go into the gates of Sheol.
I am deprived of the remainder of my years."
11I said:
"I shall not see Yah, Yah,
in the land of the living.
I shall not look upon humankind again,
among the inhabitants of the world of cessation."
12My dwelling is pulled up and removed from me,
like a shepherd's tent.
I have rolled up like a weaver my life;
from the loom-threads He cuts me off.
From day to night you bring me to an end.
13I composed myself until morning;
like a lion, so He breaks all my bones.
From day to night you bring me to an end.
14Like a swallow, a crane, so I chirp;
I moan like a dove.
My eyes are weakened, looking to the height.
My Lord, I am oppressed — be surety for me!
15What shall I say?
He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it.
I will walk softly all my years,
because of the bitterness of my soul.
16My Lord, by these things men live,
and in all of them is the life of my spirit.
Restore me to health and make me live!
17Behold, for peace — bitter to me, bitter!
But you have loved my soul from the pit of nothingness,
for you have cast behind your back all my sins.
18For Sheol does not give thanks to you;
death does not praise you.
Those who go down to the pit do not hope
for your faithfulness.
19The living, the living, he gives thanks to you,
as I do this day!
A father to children makes known
your faithfulness.
20YHWH — to save me!
And my songs we will play
all the days of our life,
at the house of YHWH.
21And Isaiah said: "Let them take a cake of figs, and let them apply it upon the boil, and he shall recover."
22And Hezekiah said: "What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of YHWH?"
