The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 61

1The spirit of the Lord YHWH is upon me,
because YHWH has anointed me
to bear tidings to the afflicted.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim to the captives liberty,
and to those who are bound, opening.
2To proclaim the year of YHWH's favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn.
3To provide for the mourners of Zion,
to give them beauty instead of ashes,
oil of gladness instead of mourning,
a garment of praise instead of a spirit of faintness.
And they shall be called "Oaks of Righteousness,"
the planting of YHWH,
that He may be glorified.
4And they shall build the ruins of antiquity,
the desolations of former times they shall raise up,
and they shall renew the ruined cities,
the desolations of generation and generation.
5And strangers shall stand and shepherd your flocks,
and foreigners shall be your farmers and your vinedressers.
6But you — you shall be called "Priests of YHWH";
"Ministers of our God" it shall be said of you.
The wealth of nations you shall eat,
and in their glory you shall glory.
7Instead of your shame — a double portion,
and instead of humiliation they shall sing over their portion.
Therefore in their land they shall possess double;
everlasting joy shall be theirs.
8For I, YHWH, love justice;
I hate robbery with injustice.
And I will give them their reward in faithfulness,
and an everlasting covenant I will cut for them.
9And their seed shall be known among the nations,
and their offspring in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them shall recognize them,
for they are the seed YHWH has blessed.
10I will greatly rejoice in YHWH;
my soul shall exult in my God,
for He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
with a robe of righteousness He has wrapped me,
like a bridegroom who adorns himself with a headdress,
and like a bride who adorns herself with her jewels.
11For as the earth brings forth its growth,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout,
so the Lord YHWH shall cause righteousness to sprout,
and praise before all the nations.
