The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 44
1"But now hear, O Jacob my servant,
and Israel whom I have chosen.
2Thus says YHWH who made you,
and who formed you from the womb — He will help you:
'Do not fear, my servant Jacob,
and Jeshurun whom I have chosen.'
3For I will pour water on the thirsty,
and streams on the dry ground.
I will pour my spirit on your seed,
and my blessing on your descendants.
4And they shall sprout among the grass,
like willows beside channels of water.
5This one shall say, 'I am YHWH's,'
and this one shall call himself by the name of Jacob,
and this one shall write on his hand, 'Belonging to YHWH,'
and shall surname himself by the name of Israel."
6Thus says YHWH, the King of Israel,
and his Redeemer, YHWH of hosts:
"I am the first and I am the last,
and besides me there is no God.
7And who like me can call and declare it
and set it in order before me,
since I established an ancient people?
And the things to come and what shall happen,
let them declare.
8Do not dread and do not be afraid!
Have I not from of old made you hear and declared?
And you are my witnesses.
Is there a god besides me?
There is no Rock — I know none."
9The formers of an idol — all of them are emptiness,
and their precious things shall not profit.
And their witnesses, they do not see and do not know,
so that they shall be put to shame.
10Who forms a god or casts an idol
to no profit?
11Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame,
and the craftsmen, they are mere men.
Let them all gather, let them stand,
they shall dread, they shall be put to shame together.
12The ironsmith takes an axe
and works over the coals
and shapes it with hammers
and works it with his strong arm.
He becomes hungry and has no strength;
he drinks no water and grows faint.
13The woodworker stretches a line;
he marks it out with a stylus.
He shapes it with planes
and marks it with a compass.
He makes it in the form of a man,
with the beauty of a man,
to dwell in a house.
14He cuts down cedars for himself;
he takes a cypress and an oak
and strengthens himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain makes it grow.
15Then it becomes fuel for a man.
He takes from them and warms himself;
indeed, he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
Also he makes a god and worships it;
he makes it an idol and bows down to it.
16Half of it he burns in the fire.
Over the half he eats meat;
he roasts a roast and is satisfied.
Also he warms himself and says,
"Aha! I am warm! I have seen the fire!"
17And the rest of it he makes into a god,
into his idol, and bows down to it
and worships it and prays to it
and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!"
18They do not know and they do not understand,
for he has smeared shut their eyes from seeing,
their hearts from understanding.
19And no one takes it to heart,
and there is no knowledge and no understanding to say,
"Half of it I burned in fire,
and also I baked bread on its coals;
I roasted meat and ate.
And the rest of it — shall I make into an abomination?
Shall I bow down to a block of wood?"
20He feeds on ashes;
a deluded heart has turned him aside.
And he cannot deliver his soul,
and he will not say,
"Is there not a lie in my right hand?"
21"Remember these things, O Jacob,
and Israel, for you are my servant.
I formed you; you are a servant to me.
O Israel, you shall not be forgotten by me.
22I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud,
and your sins like a mist.
Return to me,
for I have redeemed you."
23Sing, O heavens, for YHWH has acted!
Shout, O depths of the earth!
Break forth, O mountains, with singing,
O forest and every tree in it!
For YHWH has redeemed Jacob,
and in Israel He glorifies Himself.
24Thus says YHWH, your Redeemer,
who formed you from the womb:
"I am YHWH, who makes all things,
who stretches out the heavens by myself,
who spreads out the earth — by myself;
25who frustrates the signs of liars
and makes fools of diviners;
who turns back the wise
and makes their knowledge foolish;
26who confirms the word of His servant
and fulfills the counsel of His messengers;
who says of Jerusalem, 'She shall be inhabited,'
and of the cities of Judah, 'They shall be built,
and I will raise up her ruins';
27who says to the deep, 'Be dry!'
and 'Your rivers I will dry up';
28who says of Cyrus, 'My shepherd!'
and all my purpose he shall fulfill,
saying of Jerusalem, 'She shall be built,'
and of the temple, 'Your foundation shall be laid.'"
