The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 58
1Cry with the throat! Do not hold back!
Like the trumpet, lift up your voice!
And declare to my people their transgression,
and to the house of Jacob their sins.
2And me — day by day they seek,
and in the knowledge of my ways they delight,
like a nation that has done righteousness
and has not forsaken the justice of its God.
They ask me for judgments of righteousness;
the nearness of God they delight in.
3"Why have we fasted and you have not seen?
We have afflicted our soul and you do not know?"
Behold, on the day of your fasting you find desire,
and all your laborers you oppress.
4Behold, for strife and contention you fast,
and to strike with the fist of wickedness.
You do not fast as this day
to make your voice heard on high.
5Is it like this — shall be a fast I choose?
A day of a man's afflicting his soul?
Is it to bow down like a reed his head,
and sackcloth and ashes he spreads?
Is this what you call a fast,
and a day of favor to YHWH?
6Is not this the fast I choose:
to loosen the bonds of wickedness,
to untie the bands of the yoke,
and to send the crushed away free,
and every yoke you shall break?
7Is it not to break to the hungry your bread,
and the afflicted wandering you bring into the house?
When you see the naked, you cover him,
and from your own flesh you do not hide yourself.
8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your healing speedily shall spring forth.
And your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of YHWH shall be your rearguard.
9Then you shall call, and YHWH shall answer.
You shall cry for help, and He shall say, "Here I am!"
10If you remove from your midst the yoke,
the pointing of finger and speaking of iniquity,
and you pour out your soul to the hungry,
and satisfy the afflicted soul,
then your light shall rise in the darkness,
and your gloom shall be like the noonday.
11And YHWH shall guide you continually,
and shall satisfy in scorched places your soul,
and your bones He shall strengthen.
And you shall be like a well-watered garden,
and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.
12And they shall build from you ruins of antiquity;
foundations of generation and generation you shall raise up.
And you shall be called "Repairer of Breach,"
"Restorer of Paths to Dwell In."
13If you turn back from the sabbath your foot,
from doing your desires on my holy day,
and you call the sabbath a delight,
the holy day of YHWH honored,
and you honor it from doing your ways,
from finding your desire and speaking a word,
14then you shall delight yourself in YHWH,
and I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the earth,
and I will feed you the inheritance of Jacob your father.
For the mouth of YHWH has spoken.
