The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 19
1Burden of Egypt:
Behold, YHWH is riding upon a swift cloud,
and He comes to Egypt,
and the worthless things of Egypt tremble at His presence,
and the heart of Egypt melts within it.
2And I will stir up Egypt against Egypt,
and they shall fight — a man against his brother,
and a man against his neighbor,
city against city, kingdom against kingdom.
3And the spirit of Egypt shall be emptied out within it,
and its counsel I will swallow up;
and they shall inquire of the worthless things,
and of the mutterers,
and of the mediums,
and of the familiar spirits.
4And I will deliver Egypt into the hand of a harsh lord,
and a fierce king shall rule over them,
utterance of the Lord, YHWH of hosts.
5And waters shall be dried up from the sea,
and the river shall be parched and dried up.
6And the streams shall become foul;
the Niles of Egypt are diminished and dried up;
reed and rush wither.
7The bare places upon the Nile, at the mouth of the Nile,
and all the sown-land of the Nile shall dry up,
driven away, and it is no more.
8And the fishermen shall lament,
and all who cast a hook in the Nile shall mourn,
and those who spread a net upon the face of waters languish.
9And the workers of combed flax shall be put to shame,
and the weavers of white cloth.
10And its foundations shall be crushed,
all wage-earners, grieved in soul.
11Surely, the princes of Zoan are fools!
The wise counselors of Pharaoh — their counsel has become brutish.
How do you say to Pharaoh,
"A son of wise men am I, a son of kings of old"?
12Where are they? Where are they — your wise men?
And let them declare, now, to you,
and let them know what YHWH of hosts has purposed concerning Egypt.
13The princes of Zoan have become foolish;
the princes of Noph are deceived;
they have led Egypt astray,
the cornerstone of its tribes.
14YHWH has mixed in its midst a spirit of confusion,
and they have led Egypt astray in all its work,
as the staggering of a drunkard in his vomit.
15And there shall not be for Egypt any work
which head or tail, palm-branch or rush, may do.
16In that day Egypt shall be like women,
and it shall tremble and be in dread
because of the waving of the hand of YHWH of hosts,
which He is waving over it.
17And the land of Judah shall become to Egypt a terror;
everyone who mentions it to him shall be in dread,
because of the counsel of YHWH of hosts
which He is counseling against it.
18In that day there shall be five cities in the land of Egypt
speaking the lip of Canaan
and swearing to YHWH of hosts;
"City of the Destruction" shall be said of one.
19In that day there shall be an altar to YHWH
in the midst of the land of Egypt,
and a pillar to YHWH beside its border.
20And it shall be for a sign and for a witness
to YHWH of hosts in the land of Egypt;
for they shall cry out to YHWH because of oppressors,
and He shall send to them a savior and a great one,
and He shall deliver them.
21And YHWH shall be known to Egypt,
and Egypt shall know YHWH in that day;
and they shall worship with sacrifice and offering,
and they shall vow a vow to YHWH and fulfill it.
22And YHWH shall strike Egypt, striking and healing;
and they shall turn unto YHWH,
and He shall be entreated by them,
and He shall heal them.
23In that day there shall be a highway from Egypt to Assyria,
and Assyria shall come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria,
and Egypt shall worship with Assyria.
24In that day Israel shall be a third
with Egypt and with Assyria,
a blessing in the midst of the earth,
25whom YHWH of hosts has blessed, saying:
"Blessed be my people, Egypt,
and the work of my hands, Assyria,
and my inheritance, Israel."
