The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 29

1Woe, Ariel, Ariel,
city where David encamped!
Add year upon year,
let feasts go round.
2And I will distress Ariel,
and she will be mourning and groaning,
and she will be to me like an altar-hearth.
3And I will encamp like a circle against you,
and I will besiege against you with a siege-post,
and I will raise up siege-works against you.
4And you will be brought low,
from the ground you will speak,
and from the dust your speech will sink down.
And your voice will be like a ghost from the ground,
and from the dust your speech will chirp.
5And the multitude of your strangers will be like thin dust,
and like passing chaff the multitude of ruthless ones.
And it will be suddenly, in an instant.
6From YHWH of hosts you will be visited
with thunder and earthquake and a great sound,
storm-wind and tempest
and a flame of devouring fire.
7And it will be like a dream, a vision of the night,
the multitude of all the nations who war against Ariel,
and all who war against her,
and her siege-works,
and those who distress her.
8And it will be just as the hungry one dreams,
and behold, he is eating,
and he awakes, and empty is his appetite;
and just as the thirsty one dreams,
and behold, he is drinking,
and he awakes, and behold, he is faint,
and his appetite is craving,
so will be the multitude of all the nations
who war against Mount Zion.
9Linger and be astonished!
Blind yourselves and be blind!
Be drunk, but not with wine!
Stagger, but not with strong drink!
10For YHWH has poured out upon you
a spirit of deep sleep,
and He has shut your eyes — the prophets,
and your heads — the seers — He has covered.
11And the vision of everything has become for you
like the words of the sealed scroll,
which they give to one who knows reading,
saying, "Read this, please!"
And he says, "I cannot, for it is sealed."
12And the scroll is given to one who does not know reading,
saying, "Read this, please!"
And he says, "I do not know reading."
13And the Lord said:
"Because this people draws near with its mouth,
and with its lips they honor me,
but its heart is far from me,
and their fear of me has become
a commandment of men, learned by rote —"
14Therefore, behold, I will continue
to do wondrously with this people,
a wonder and a wonder.
And the wisdom of his wise ones will perish,
and the understanding of his discerning ones will hide itself.
15Woe to those who go deep from YHWH to hide counsel,
and whose works are in darkness,
and they say, "Who sees us?
And who knows us?"
16Your perversity!
Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
that the thing made says to its maker,
"He did not make me,"
and the thing formed says to its fashioner,
"He does not understand"?
17Is it not yet a very little while,
and Lebanon will be turned to garden-land,
and the garden-land as a forest shall be regarded?
18And in that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a scroll,
and out of gloom and out of darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
19And the meek shall increase joy in YHWH,
and the needy of mankind
in the Holy One of Israel shall exult.
20For the ruthless has come to nothing,
and the scoffer has come to an end,
and all who watch for iniquity are cut off,
21those who make a man guilty by a word,
and for the one who reproves in the gate they set a snare,
and they turn aside the righteous with emptiness.
22Therefore thus says YHWH to the house of Jacob,
who redeemed Abraham:
"Not now shall Jacob be ashamed,
and not now shall his face grow pale."
23For when he sees his children,
the work of my hands, in his midst,
they will sanctify my name,
and they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
and the God of Israel they will stand in awe of.
24And those who err in spirit shall know understanding,
and murmurers shall learn instruction.
