The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 23
1Burden of Tyre,
Wail, O ships of Tarshish!
For it is destroyed — no house, no entering!
From the land of Kittim it is revealed to them.
2Be silent, inhabitants of the coast!
The merchant of Sidon, crossing the sea, filled you.
3And upon many waters,
the seed of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue,
and she became the marketplace of nations.
4Be ashamed, O Sidon!
For the sea has spoken — the fortress of the sea — saying:
"I have not labored and I have not given birth,
I have not raised young men and I have not brought up young women."
5When the report reaches Egypt,
they shall writhe at the report of Tyre.
6Cross over to Tarshish!
Wail, inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city,
whose antiquity is from the days of old,
whose feet carried her from afar to sojourn?
8Who planned this against Tyre the crown-bestower,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored ones of the earth?
9YHWH of hosts planned it,
to profane the pride of all beauty,
to bring contempt upon all the honored ones of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish,
there is no restraint anymore.
11His hand He stretched out over the sea,
He shook kingdoms.
YHWH has commanded concerning Canaan,
to destroy her fortresses.
12And He said: "You shall no longer exult,
O oppressed one, O virgin daughter of Sidon.
To Kittim — arise, cross over!
Even there, there will be no rest for you."
13Behold, the land of the Chaldeans,
this people that did not exist!
Assyria founded it for desert creatures.
They raised up its siege towers,
they stripped her palaces,
they made it a ruin.
14Wail, O ships of Tarshish!
For your fortress is destroyed.
15And it shall be in that day,
Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years,
like the days of one king.
At the end of seventy years,
it shall be for Tyre like the song of the harlot:
16"Take a harp, go about the city,
O forgotten harlot!
Play skillfully, multiply songs,
that you may be remembered."
17And it shall be, at the end of seventy years,
YHWH will visit Tyre,
and she shall return to her hire,
and she shall commit harlotry
with all the kingdoms of the earth
on the face of the ground.
18And her merchandise and her hire
shall be holy to YHWH.
It shall not be stored up and shall not be hoarded,
for her merchandise shall be
for those who dwell before YHWH,
to eat to sufficiency
and for stately covering.
