The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 16
1Send a lamb to the ruler of the land,
from Sela, toward the wilderness,
to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
2And it shall be — like a bird wandering,
a nest sent away,
the daughters of Moab shall be
at the fords of the Arnon.
3Bring counsel, execute a decision!
Set like the night your shadow
in the midst of noon;
hide the outcasts,
the wanderer, do not betray!
4Let my outcasts of Moab sojourn in you;
be a hiding place for them
from the face of the destroyer,
for the oppressor has come to an end,
destruction has come to an end,
the trampler is consumed from the land.
5And a throne is established in steadfast love,
and one shall sit upon it in faithfulness,
in the tent of David,
judging, and seeking justice,
and swift of righteousness.
6We have heard the pride of Moab,
exceedingly proud,
his haughtiness and his pride
and his overflowing rage;
not so are his boasts.
7Therefore Moab wails for Moab,
all of it wails;
for the raisin-cakes of Kir-hareseth
you shall moan,
surely stricken.
8For the terraced fields of Heshbon languish,
the vine of Sibmah,
the lords of the nations
have struck down its choice vines;
as far as Jazer they reached,
they wandered into the wilderness;
its shoots were spread out,
they crossed over the sea.
9Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer
for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tear(s),
Heshbon and Elealeh,
for upon your summer fruit and upon your harvest
a shout has fallen.
10And joy and gladness are gathered from the garden-land,
and in the vineyards there is no singing,
there is no shouting;
wine in the winepresses
the treader does not tread,
the shout I have caused to cease.
11Therefore my inward parts for Moab
like a harp moan,
and my inner being
for Kir-heres.
12And it shall be — when it is seen
that Moab has wearied himself at the high place,
and he enters his sanctuary to pray,
but he is not able.
13This is the word which YHWH spoke
concerning Moab from of old.
14And now YHWH has spoken, saying:
"Within three years, like the years of a hired worker,
the glory of Moab shall be brought into contempt,
with all the great multitude,
and a remnant: small, insignificant, not mighty."
