The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 24

1Behold, YHWH empties the earth
and devastates it,
and twists its face,
and scatters its inhabitants.
2And it shall be,
as the people, so the priest;
as the servant, so his master;
as the maidservant, so her mistress;
as the buyer, so the seller;
as the lender, so the borrower;
as the creditor, so the one who has a debt upon him.
3The earth shall be utterly emptied,
and utterly plundered,
for YHWH has spoken this word.
4The earth mourns, withers;
the world languishes, withers;
the height of the people of the earth languishes.
5And the earth is defiled under its inhabitants,
for they have transgressed torahs,
violated the statute,
broken the everlasting covenant.
6Therefore a curse devours the earth,
and those dwelling in it bear guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
and humanity remains — few.
7The new wine mourns,
the vine languishes;
all the merry-hearted groan.
8The exultation of tambourines ceases,
the noise of the jubilant ceases,
the exultation of the lyre ceases.
9With song they shall not drink wine;
strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10The city of formlessness is broken down;
every house is shut from entering.
11An outcry over the wine in the streets;
all rejoicing grows dark;
the exultation of the earth is exiled.
12There remains in the city — desolation,
and to ruin the gate is battered.
13For thus it shall be
in the midst of the earth,
among the peoples,
as the beating of an olive tree,
as gleanings
when the vintage is finished.
14They — they shall lift up their voice,
they shall shout for joy
concerning the majesty of YHWH;
they shout from the sea.
15Therefore in the regions of light — honor YHWH!
In the coastlands of the sea,
the name of YHWH, God of Israel!
16From the wing of the earth
songs we have heard,
"Glory to the Righteous One!"
But I say:
"Leanness to me! Leanness to me!
Woe to me!
Treacherous ones have acted treacherously,
and with treachery
treacherous ones have acted treacherously."
17Terror and pit and snare
upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
18And it shall be,
the one fleeing from the sound of the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and the one climbing out of the midst of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
For the windows from on high are opened,
and the foundations of the earth tremble.
19Breaking — the earth is utterly broken;
splitting — the earth is utterly split;
tottering — the earth utterly totters.
20Reeling, the earth reels like a drunkard
and sways like a hut;
and its transgression is heavy upon it,
and it falls
and shall not rise again.
21And it shall be in that day,
YHWH shall punish
the host of the height in the height,
and the kings of the ground upon the ground.
22And they shall be gathered
as a prisoner into a pit,
and shut up in a prison;
and after many days
they shall be visited.
23And the moon shall be ashamed
and the sun shall be put to shame,
for YHWH of hosts reigns
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and before His elders — glory.
