The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 30

1Woe, rebellious children!
declaration of YHWH,
To carry out counsel, but not from me,
and to pour a libation, but not my spirit,
in order to add sin upon sin.
2Those who go to go down to Egypt,
and my mouth they did not ask,
to seek strength in the stronghold of Pharaoh,
and to shelter in the shadow of Egypt.
3And the stronghold of Pharaoh shall be to you for shame,
and the sheltering in the shadow of Egypt for disgrace.
4For his princes are in Zoan,
and his envoys reach Hanes.
5All are put to shame because of a people who do not profit them,
not for help and not for profit,
but for shame and also for reproach.
6Burden of the beasts of the Negev.
In a land of distress and anguish,
lioness and lion from among them,
viper and flying fiery serpent,
they carry upon the shoulder of donkeys their wealth,
and upon the hump of camels their treasures,
to a people who do not profit.
7And Egypt — vanity and emptiness they help.
Therefore I have called this one:
Rahab-who-sits-still.
8Now, come! Write it upon a tablet before them,
and upon a scroll inscribe it,
and let it be for a latter day,
for a witness until forever.
9For it is a people of rebellion,
lying children,
children who refused to hear the torah of YHWH.
10Who said to the seers, "Do not see!"
and to the visionaries, "Do not envision for us right things!"
"Speak to us smooth things!
Envision illusions!"
11"Turn aside from the way!
Turn away from the path!
Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us!"
12Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:
"Because you reject this word,
and you trust in oppression and crookedness,
and you lean upon it —"
13Therefore this iniquity shall be to you
like a breach falling, bulging out in a high wall,
whose shattering comes suddenly, in an instant.
14And its shattering is like the shattering of a jar of potters,
crushed, he does not spare,
and there is not found among its fragments a shard
to scoop up fire from a hearth,
or to scoop water from a cistern.
15For thus says the Lord YHWH, the Holy One of Israel:
"In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength."
But you were not willing.
16And you said, "No!
For upon a horse we will flee!"
Therefore you shall flee.
"And upon a swift one we will ride!"
Therefore swift shall be your pursuers.
17A thousand at the threat of one,
at the threat of five you shall flee,
until you are left
like a flagstaff upon the top of a mountain,
and like a signal upon a hill.
18And therefore YHWH waits to be gracious to you,
and therefore He rises up to have compassion on you,
for YHWH is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for Him.
19For a people in Zion shall dwell, in Jerusalem.
Weeping, you shall not weep.
Graciously He will be gracious to you
at the sound of your cry;
when He hears it, He will answer you.
20And the Lord will give you bread of distress
and water of oppression,
but your Teacher shall no longer hide Himself,
and your eyes shall see your Teacher.
21And your ears shall hear a word from behind you,
saying, "This is the way — walk in it!"
whether you turn to the right or to the left.
22And you shall defile the plating of your carved images of silver,
and the covering of your molten images of gold.
You shall scatter them like a menstruous thing;
"Begone!" you shall say to it.
23And He will give rain for your seed
with which you sow the ground,
and the bread of the produce of the ground
shall be rich and plenteous.
Your cattle shall graze in that day
in a broad pasture.
24And the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground
shall eat seasoned fodder,
which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.
25And there shall be upon every high mountain
and upon every lifted-up hill
streams, watercourses of water,
in the day of great slaughter, when towers fall.
26And the light of the moon shall be like the light of the sun,
and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,
like the light of seven days,
in the day YHWH binds up the fracture of His people,
and the wound of His blow He heals.
27Behold, the name of YHWH comes from afar,
burning is His anger, and heavy is the uplifting.
His lips are full of indignation,
and His tongue is like a devouring fire.
28And His breath is like an overflowing torrent,
up to the neck it divides,
to sift nations with a sieve of destruction,
and a bridle that leads astray
upon the jaws of peoples.
29The song shall be for you
like the night when a feast is sanctified,
and gladness of heart,
like the one who goes with the flute
to come to the mountain of YHWH,
to the Rock of Israel.
30And YHWH will cause the majesty of His voice to be heard,
and the descending of His arm He will show,
in raging fury of anger and a flame of devouring fire,
cloudburst and downpour and hailstone.
31For at the voice of YHWH Assyria shall be shattered;
with the rod He will strike.
32And every stroke of the staff of appointed punishment,
which YHWH lays upon him,
shall be with tambourines and with lyres,
and in battles of brandishing He fights against them.
33For Topheth has been prepared from of old;
even it for the king has been made ready.
He has made it deep, He has made it wide;
its funeral pyre is fire and wood in abundance.
The breath of YHWH, like a stream of brimstone,
sets it ablaze.
