The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 52

1Awake, awake,
put on your strength, O Zion!
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, holy city!
For the uncircumcised and the unclean
shall no longer come into you.
2Shake yourself free from the dust,
arise, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem!
Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion!
3For thus says YHWH:
For nothing you were sold,
and not with money shall you be redeemed.
4For thus says the Lord YHWH:
To Egypt my people went down at the first to sojourn there,
and Assyria for nothing oppressed him.
5And now, what have I here? declares YHWH,
for my people is taken for nothing.
His rulers howl declares YHWH,
and continually, all day long,
my name is despised.
6Therefore my people shall know my name;
therefore in that day,
that I am the one who speaks: "Here am I."
7How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of the bearer of good tidings,
who announces peace,
who brings good tidings of good,
who announces salvation,
who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!"
8The voice of your watchmen! They lift up a voice,
together they sing,
for eye to eye they see
when YHWH returns to Zion.
9Break forth, sing together,
O waste places of Jerusalem!
For YHWH has comforted His people,
has redeemed Jerusalem.
10YHWH has bared His holy arm
before the eyes of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth shall see
the salvation of our God.
11Depart, depart, go out from there!
Touch no unclean thing!
Go out from her midst, purify yourselves,
O bearers of the vessels of YHWH!
12For not in haste shall you go out,
and in flight you shall not go,
for YHWH goes before you,
and your rear guard is the God of Israel.
13Behold, my servant shall act wisely;
he shall be high and lifted up and very exalted.
14Just as many were astonished at you,
so marred was his appearance beyond that of a man,
and his form beyond that of the sons of man,
15so he shall sprinkle many nations;
at him kings shall shut their mouths,
for what was not told to them they see,
and what they had not heard they understand.
