The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 8
1And YHWH said to me, "Take for yourself a large tablet and write upon it with the stylus of a man: 'Belonging-to-Maher-shalal-hash-baz.'"
2And I will call as witnesses for myself faithful witnesses: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.
3And I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. And YHWH said to me, "Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz."
4For before the boy knows to cry "My father!" and "My mother!", the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried off before the king of Assyria.
5And YHWH spoke to me yet again, saying:
6"Because this people has rejected
the waters of the Shiloah that flow gently,
and rejoicing in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
7therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up upon them
the waters of the River, the mighty and the many,
the king of Assyria and all his glory.
And it shall rise over all its channels
and go over all its banks.
8And it shall sweep on into Judah,
overflow and pass through;
up to the neck it shall reach.
And the spreading of his wings
shall fill the breadth of your land,
O Immanuel."
9Be shattered, O peoples, and be dismayed!
And give ear, all distant places of the earth!
Gird yourselves, and be dismayed!
Gird yourselves, and be dismayed!
10Take counsel, and it shall be annulled!
Speak a word, and it shall not stand!
For God is with us.
11For thus said YHWH to me with the strength of the hand, and He disciplined me from walking in the way of this people, saying:
12"Do not call conspiracy
all that this people calls conspiracy;
and what it fears, do not fear,
and do not dread."
13YHWH of hosts — Him you shall sanctify!
And He shall be your fear,
and He shall be your dread.
14And He shall become a sanctuary,
but a stone of stumbling and a rock of stumbling
to the two houses of Israel;
a snare and a trap
to the inhabitant of Jerusalem.
15And many shall stumble against them,
and fall, and be broken,
and be snared, and be taken.
16Bind up the testimony;
seal the torah among my disciples.
17And I will wait for YHWH,
who hides His face from the house of Jacob,
and I will hope for Him.
18Behold, I and the children whom YHWH has given me
are for signs and portents in Israel,
from YHWH of hosts
who dwells on Mount Zion.
19And when they say to you,
"Inquire of the mediums and the familiar spirits,
who chirp and who mutter",
should not a people inquire of its God?
On behalf of the living, to the dead?
20To the torah and to the testimony!
If they do not speak according to this word,
it is because there is no dawn for him.
21And he shall pass through it, hard-pressed and hungry.
And it shall be, when he is hungry, he shall be enraged,
and he shall curse by his king and by his God.
And he shall turn upward,
22and to the earth he shall look,
and behold: distress and darkness,
gloom of anguish,
and thick darkness, driven away.
