The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 63

1"Who is this coming from Edom,
crimsoned of garments from Bozrah?
This one, majestic in his clothing,
marching in the greatness of his strength?"
"I, the one speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save."
2"Why is your clothing red,
and your garments like one who treads in a winepress?"
3"A winepress I have trodden alone,
and from the peoples no man was with me.
And I trampled them in my anger,
and I trod them down in my wrath,
and their lifeblood spattered upon my garments,
and all my clothing I have stained.
4For a day of vengeance was in my heart,
and the year of my redeemed had come.
5And I looked, and there was no helper,
and I was appalled, and there was none upholding.
And my own arm saved for me,
and my wrath, it upheld me.
6And I trampled peoples in my anger,
and I made them drunk in my wrath,
and I brought down their lifeblood to the earth."
7The steadfast loves of YHWH I will recount,
the praises of YHWH,
according to all that YHWH has bestowed upon us,
and the great goodness to the house of Israel,
which He bestowed upon them according to His compassions
and according to the abundance of His steadfast loves.
8And He said, "Surely they are my people,
children who will not deal falsely."
And He became for them a Savior.
9In all their affliction He was afflicted,
and the angel of His presence saved them.
In His love and in His compassion He redeemed them,
and He lifted them and He carried them all the days of old.
10But they rebelled and grieved His holy spirit,
and He turned against them into an enemy,
He fought against them.
11And He remembered the days of old, Moses, His people:
"Where is the one who brought them up from the sea
with the shepherd of His flock?
Where is the one who placed in their midst His holy spirit,
12who made His glorious arm go at Moses' right hand,
who split the waters before them
to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13who led them through the deeps?
Like a horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble.
14Like cattle going down into the valley,
the spirit of YHWH gave them rest."
So you led your people,
to make for yourself a glorious name.
15Look down from the heavens and see,
from the habitation of your holiness and your splendor!
Where is your zeal and your mighty acts?
The stirring of your inner parts and your compassions
toward me have restrained themselves.
16For you are our Father,
though Abraham does not know us,
and Israel does not recognize us.
You, YHWH, are our Father;
our Redeemer from of old is your name.
17Why, YHWH, do you cause us to wander from your ways?
[Why] do you harden our heart from fearing you?
Return for the sake of your servants,
the tribes of your inheritance!
VI. "REND THE HEAVENS AND COME DOWN!" (63:18-19)
18For a little while your holy people possessed [the land];
our adversaries have trampled your sanctuary.
19We have become like those over whom you never ruled,
like those over whom your name was never called.
O that you would rend the heavens and come down!
Before your face the mountains would quake!
