The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 48
1Hear this, O house of Jacob,
the ones called by the name of Israel,
and who came forth from the waters of Judah,
the ones swearing by the name of YHWH,
and who invoke the God of Israel,
not in truth and not in righteousness!
2For from the holy city they are called,
and upon the God of Israel they lean,
YHWH of hosts is His name.
3The former things — from of old I declared them,
and from my mouth they went forth, and I announced them.
Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
4Because I knew that you are stubborn,
and an iron sinew is your neck,
and your forehead is bronze,
5and I declared to you from of old;
before it came I caused you to hear,
lest you should say, "My idol made them,
and my carved image and my molten image commanded them."
6You have heard — behold all of it!
And will you not declare it?
I have caused you to hear new things from this time,
and hidden things, and you did not know them.
7Now they are created, and not from of old;
and before today you have not heard them,
lest you should say, "Behold, I knew them!"
8Indeed you did not hear,
indeed you did not know,
indeed from of old your ear was not opened,
for I knew that treacherously you deal treacherously,
and "transgressor from the womb" you have been called.
9For the sake of my name I defer my anger,
and for my praise I restrain myself for you,
so as not to cut you off.
10Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
11For my sake, for my sake, I will act!
For how shall it be profaned?
And my glory I will not give to another.
12Hear me, O Jacob, and Israel my called one!
I am He; I am the first, indeed I am the last.
13Indeed my hand laid the foundation of the earth,
and my right hand spread out the heavens.
I call to them, they stand together.
14Assemble, all of you, and hear!
Who among them declared these things?
The one YHWH loves shall do His pleasure against Babylon,
and his arm against the Chaldeans.
15I, I have spoken;
indeed I have called him,
I have brought him,
and he shall prosper in his way.
16Draw near to me, hear this:
Not from the beginning in secret have I spoken.
From the time of its happening, there I am.
And now the Lord YHWH has sent me, and His Spirit.
17Thus says YHWH, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
I am YHWH your God,
the one teaching you to profit,
the one leading you in the way you should walk.
18If only you had paid attention to my commandments!
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
19And your seed would have been like the sand,
and the issue of your body like its grains.
His name would not be cut off
nor destroyed from before me.
20Go out from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!
With a voice of singing declare, announce this!
Send it forth to the end of the earth!
Say, "YHWH has redeemed His servant Jacob!"
21And they did not thirst,
through waste places He led them;
water from a rock He caused to flow for them;
and He split the rock, and waters gushed.
22"There is no peace," says YHWH, "for the wicked."
