The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 41
1Be silent before me, O coastlands,
and let the peoples renew strength;
let them draw near, then let them speak.
Together, for the trial, let us draw near.
2Who has roused from the east
one whom righteousness calls to his foot?
He gives nations before him,
and kings He subdues;
He makes his sword like dust,
his bow like driven stubble.
3He pursues them, he passes through in safety,
a path his feet have not trodden.
4Who has performed and done,
calling the generations from the beginning?
I, YHWH, the first,
and with the last — I am He.
5The coastlands see and fear;
the ends of the earth tremble;
they draw near and come.
6Each one helps his neighbor,
and to his brother he says, "Be strong!"
7The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith;
he who smooths with the hammer, him who strikes the anvil,
saying of the solder, "It is good!",
and he fastens it with nails so it will not totter.
8But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
seed of Abraham my friend,
9whom I grasped from the ends of the earth
and from its remote places I called you,
and I said to you, "You are my servant;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you",
10Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I strengthen you, indeed I help you,
indeed I uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
11Behold, they shall be put to shame and humiliated,
all who are angry against you;
they shall be as nothing,
and the men of your strife shall perish.
12You shall seek them and not find them,
the men of your conflict;
they shall be as nothing and as nothingness,
the men of your war.
13For I am YHWH your God, who grasps your right hand,
who says to you: Do not fear — I help you.
14Do not fear, O worm Jacob,
O men of Israel!
I help you declares YHWH,
and your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
15Behold, I make you a sharp threshing-sledge,
new, possessing teeth;
you shall thresh mountains and crush,
and hills you shall make like chaff.
16You shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away,
and a storm-wind shall scatter them.
And you shall rejoice in YHWH;
in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory.
17The poor and the needy seek water, and there is none;
their tongue is parched with thirst.
I, YHWH, will answer them;
the God of Israel — I will not forsake them.
18I will open rivers on bare heights,
and springs in the midst of valleys;
I will make the wilderness into a pool of water,
and dry land into springs of water.
19I will give in the wilderness
the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the oil tree;
I will set in the desert-plain
the cypress, the plane tree, and the pine together,
20so that they may see and know
and consider and understand together,
that the hand of YHWH has done this,
and the Holy One of Israel has created it.
21"Present your case," says YHWH;
"bring forward your strong arguments," says the King of Jacob.
22Let them bring forward and declare to us the things that shall happen.
The former things — what are they? Declare,
that we may consider and know their outcome.
Or the things to come — announce to us!
23Declare the things coming hereafter,
and we shall know that you are gods.
Indeed, do good or do evil,
and we will be dismayed and look together.
24Behold, you are from nothing,
and your work is from nothing;
an abomination is the one who chooses you.
25I have roused from the north, and he comes;
from the rising of the sun he calls upon my name.
And he comes upon rulers like mortar,
and like a potter treads clay.
26Who declared from the beginning, that we might know,
and beforehand, that we might say, "He is right"?
Indeed, there is none declaring,
there is none announcing,
indeed, there is none hearing your words.
27First to Zion — "Behold, behold them!",
and to Jerusalem a herald of good tidings I will give.
28And I look, and there is no one;
and among these, there is no counselor;
and I ask them, and they return a word.
29Behold, all of them are nothingness;
nothing are their works;
wind and emptiness are their molten images.
