The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 5

1Let me sing, please, for my beloved,
a song of my beloved concerning his vineyard:
A vineyard there was for my beloved
on a horn, a son of oil.
2And he dug it and cleared it of stones
and planted it with a choice vine,
and he built a tower in its midst
and also a wine-vat he hewed in it;
and he waited for it to yield grapes,
and it yielded wild grapes.
3And now, O inhabitant of Jerusalem
and man of Judah,
judge, please, between me
and between my vineyard.
4What more was there to do for my vineyard
that I have not done in it?
Why did I wait for it to yield grapes,
and it yielded wild grapes?
5And now, let me make known to you, please,
what I am about to do to my vineyard:
to remove its hedge,
and it shall be for consuming;
to break down its wall,
and it shall be for trampling.
6And I will make it a waste;
it shall not be pruned and it shall not be hoed,
and brier and thorn shall come up;
and upon the clouds I will command
not to rain rain upon it.
7For the vineyard of YHWH of hosts
is the house of Israel,
and the man of Judah
is the plant of His delight;
and He waited for justice,
and behold, bloodshed;
for righteousness,
and behold, an outcry.
8Woe! Those who join house to house,
field to field they bring near,
until there is no place,
and you are made to dwell by yourselves
in the midst of the land.
9In my ears — YHWH of hosts,
surely many houses shall be for desolation,
great and good ones,
without inhabitant.
10For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath,
and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.
11Woe! Those who rise early in the morning,
strong drink they pursue,
those who linger in the twilight,
wine inflames them.
12And there is lyre and lute,
tambourine and flute, and wine at their feasts;
but the work of YHWH they do not regard,
and the work of His hands they have not seen.
13Therefore my people goes into exile
for lack of knowledge,
and his honored ones are men of hunger,
and his multitude parched with thirst.
14Therefore Sheol has enlarged her appetite
and opened wide her mouth without limit;
and down goes her splendor and her multitude
and her tumult and the one exulting in her.
15And man is bowed down,
and a man is brought low,
and the eyes of the lofty ones are brought low.
16And YHWH of hosts is exalted in justice,
and the Holy God shows himself holy in righteousness.
17And lambs shall graze as in their pasture,
and the ruins of the fat ones — sojourners shall eat.
18Woe! Those who drag the iniquity with cords of emptiness,
and as with cart-ropes — sin!
19Those who say:
"Let Him hasten, let Him hurry His work,
so that we may see;
and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel
draw near and come,
and let us know!"
20Woe! Those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
21Woe! The wise in their own eyes,
and before their own faces discerning!
22Woe! Heroes at drinking wine,
and men of valor at mixing strong drink,
23those who justify the wicked on account of a bribe,
and the righteousness of the righteous they remove from him!
24Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble,
and dry grass sinks before flame,
their root shall be as rottenness,
and their blossom shall go up as dust;
for they have rejected the Torah of YHWH of hosts,
and the utterance of the Holy One of Israel
they have spurned.
25Therefore the anger of YHWH has burned against His people,
and He has stretched out His hand against him
and struck him;
and the mountains trembled,
and their corpses were as refuse
in the midst of the streets.
For all this His anger is not turned back,
and still His hand is stretched out.
26And He shall lift up a signal to the nations from afar,
and He shall whistle for him from the end of the earth;
and behold, swiftly, quickly it comes!
27There is no weary one and there is no stumbling one among them;
none slumbers and none sleeps;
the belt of his loins is not loosened,
and the strap of his sandals is not broken.
28Whose arrows are sharpened,
and all his bows are bent;
the hooves of his horses are reckoned as flint,
and his wheels as a whirlwind.
29His roaring is as a lioness;
he roars as young lions,
and he growls and seizes prey
and carries it away,
and there is no deliverer.
30And he growls against him in that day
as the roaring of the sea;
and one looks to the land,
and behold, darkness of distress,
and light has grown dark in her clouds.
