The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 53
1Who has believed our report?
And the arm of YHWH — to whom has it been revealed?
2And he grew up like a sapling before him,
and like a root out of dry ground.
No form for him and no beauty,
and when we see him, no appearance
that we should desire him.
3Despised and rejected of men,
a man of pains and knowing sickness;
and like one hiding faces from him,
despised, and we esteemed him not.
4Surely our sicknesses he bore,
and our pains he carried;
but we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5But he was pierced for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
the chastisement of our peace was upon him,
and by his stripe we are healed.
6All of us like sheep went astray,
each to his own way we turned;
and YHWH caused to fall upon him
the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth.
Like a lamb to the slaughter he is led,
and like a ewe before her shearers is silent,
and he did not open his mouth.
8From oppression and from judgment he was taken;
and his generation — who considered?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people a stroke was to him.
9And they assigned his grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10And YHWH was pleased to crush him;
He made him sick.
If his soul makes a guilt-offering,
he shall see seed, he shall prolong days,
and the pleasure of YHWH
shall prosper in his hand.
11From the travail of his soul he shall see;
he shall be satisfied.
By his knowledge the righteous one,
my servant, shall make many righteous,
and their iniquities he shall bear.
12Therefore I will divide to him among the many,
and with the mighty he shall divide spoil,
because he poured out his soul to death,
and was numbered with transgressors;
and he bore the sin of many,
and for the transgressors he intercedes.
