The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 26

1In that day this song shall be sung
in the land of Judah:
"A city of strength is ours,
salvation He sets as walls and rampart.
2Open the gates,
and let a righteous nation enter,
keeping faithfulness.
3The steadfast mind
You shall keep in peace, peace,
for in You he trusts.
4Trust in YHWH forever,
for in Yah, YHWH, is a rock of ages.
5For He has brought down the dwellers of the height,
the lofty city,
He brings it low, He brings it low,
to the ground He brings it,
to the dust.
6The foot shall trample it,
the feet of the poor,
the steps of the weak."
7The path for the righteous is level,
O Upright One, the track of the righteous
You make level.
8Indeed, in the path of Your judgments, YHWH,
we wait for You,
for Your name and for Your memorial
is the desire of the soul.
9My soul — I desire You in the night;
indeed, my spirit within me,
I seek You earnestly.
For when Your judgments are in the earth,
righteousness the inhabitants of the world learn.
10Though grace is shown to the wicked,
he does not learn righteousness;
in a land of uprightness he deals unjustly,
and he does not see the majesty of YHWH.
11YHWH, Your hand is raised,
they do not see.
Let them see and be ashamed,
zeal for the people!
Indeed, fire — Your adversaries,
shall consume them.
12YHWH, You establish peace for us,
for indeed all our works
You have worked for us.
13YHWH our God,
lords other than You have lorded over us;
by You alone
we invoke Your name.
14The dead shall not live;
shades shall not rise.
Therefore You have visited
and You have destroyed them,
and You have caused every memorial
of theirs to perish.
15You have added to the nation, YHWH,
You have added to the nation,
You have been glorified;
You have extended all the ends of the earth.
16YHWH, in distress they sought You;
they poured out a whisper
when Your discipline was upon them.
17Like a pregnant woman who draws near to give birth,
she writhes, she cries out in her birth-pangs,
so we were before You, YHWH.
18We conceived, we writhed,
as though we gave birth to wind.
Salvations we have not worked in the earth,
and the inhabitants of the world have not fallen.
19Your dead shall live;
my corpses shall arise.
Awake and sing, dwellers of dust!
For a dew of lights is Your dew,
and the earth shall bring forth the shades.
20Go, my people,
enter your chambers,
and shut your door behind you.
Hide yourself for a little moment,
until the wrath passes.
21For behold, YHWH is coming out from His place
to punish the iniquity of the inhabitant
of the earth upon him;
and the earth shall disclose her bloods,
and shall no longer cover over her slain.
