The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 27

1In that day YHWH shall punish
with His sword,
the hard and the great and the strong,
upon Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
and upon Leviathan the twisting serpent;
and He shall slay the dragon
that is in the sea.
2In that day,
a vineyard of delight,
sing of it!
3"I, YHWH, am its keeper;
every moment I water it.
Lest anyone harm it,
night and day I guard it.
4Wrath I have not.
Who would set before me
thorns and briers in battle?
I would march against it,
I would burn it altogether.
5Or let him lay hold of my refuge;
let him make peace with me,
peace let him make with me."
6In days to come
Jacob shall take root;
Israel shall blossom and bud,
and they shall fill the face
of the world with fruit.
7As the striking of the one who struck him,
has He struck him?
Or as the slaying of his slain,
has he been slain?
8By measure, by sending her away,
He contends with her.
He drove her out with His harsh wind,
in the day of the east wind.
9Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob
shall be atoned for,
and this is all the fruit
of removing his sin:
when he makes all the stones of the altar
like chalkstones shattered,
Asherah poles and incense altars
shall not stand.
10For the fortified city is solitary,
a habitation forsaken and abandoned,
like the wilderness.
There the calf grazes and there it lies down,
and consumes its branches.
11When its boughs are dry, they are broken off;
women come, lighting it.
For this is not a people of understanding;
therefore his Maker
shall not have compassion on him,
and his Former
shall not show grace to him.
12And it shall be in that day:
YHWH shall thresh
from the channel of the River
to the Brook of Egypt,
and you shall be gleaned one by one,
O sons of Israel.
13And it shall be in that day:
a great trumpet shall be blown,
and those lost in the land of Assyria shall come,
and those driven out in the land of Egypt;
and they shall worship YHWH
on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
