The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 51
1Listen to me, pursuers of righteousness,
seekers of YHWH.
Look to the rock you were hewn from,
and to the hollow of the pit you were dug out from.
2Look to Abraham your father,
and to Sarah who bore you.
For one I called him,
and I blessed him,
and I multiplied him.
3For YHWH comforts Zion,
comforts all her waste places,
and He has made her wilderness like Eden,
and her desert plain like the garden of YHWH.
Gladness and joy shall be found in her,
thanksgiving and the sound of song.
4Give attention to me, my people,
and my nation, to me give ear,
for torah shall go out from me,
and my justice for a light of peoples I will establish.
5Near is my righteousness,
my salvation has gone out,
and my arms shall judge peoples.
For me the coastlands shall wait,
and for my arm they shall hope.
6Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look to the earth beneath,
for the heavens like smoke shall be dispersed,
and the earth like a garment shall wear out,
and her inhabitants in like manner shall die.
But my salvation shall be forever,
and my righteousness shall not be broken.
7Listen to me, knowers of righteousness,
people with my torah in their heart.
Do not fear the reproach of mortals,
and at their revilings do not be dismayed.
8For like a garment the moth shall eat them,
and like wool the worm shall eat them.
But my righteousness shall be forever,
and my salvation to a generation of generations.
9Awake, awake, put on strength,
O arm of YHWH!
Awake as in days of old,
generations of ages!
Are you not the one who hewed Rahab,
who pierced the dragon?
10Are you not the one who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep;
who made the depths of the sea a way
for the redeemed to cross?
11And the ransomed of YHWH shall return,
and shall come to Zion with singing,
and everlasting joy upon their heads.
Gladness and joy shall overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
12I, I am the one who comforts you.
Who are you that you fear mortals who die,
and a son of man who is made like grass?
13And you have forgotten YHWH your Maker,
who stretches out the heavens and founds the earth,
and you dread continually, all day long,
because of the fury of the oppressor,
when he prepares to destroy.
But where is the fury of the oppressor?
14The one bowed down hastens to be set free;
he shall not die in the pit,
and his bread shall not be lacking.
15And I am YHWH your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar,
YHWH of hosts is His name.
16And I have put my words in your mouth,
and in the shadow of my hand I have covered you,
to plant the heavens,
and to found the earth,
and to say to Zion, "My people you are."
17Rouse yourself, rouse yourself, stand up,
O Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of YHWH
the cup of His fury,
the bowl of the cup of staggering
you have drunk, you have drained.
18There is none to lead her
among all the sons she bore,
and none to take her hand
among all the sons she raised.
19Two things have befallen you,
who shall grieve for you?
The devastation and the ruin,
and the famine and the sword,
who shall comfort you?
20Your sons have fainted,
they lie at the head of every street,
like an antelope in a net,
filled with the fury of YHWH,
the rebuke of your God.
21Therefore hear now this,
O afflicted one,
drunken but not from wine:
22Thus says your Lord YHWH,
your God who contends for His people:
Behold, I have taken from your hand
the cup of staggering,
the bowl of the cup of my fury,
you shall not drink it anymore.
23And I will put it in the hand of your tormentors,
who said to you,
"Bow down, and we will pass over."
And you made your back like the ground,
and like a street for those who pass over.
