The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 32

1Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness,
and princes shall rule in justice.
2And each one shall be like a hiding-place from wind,
and a shelter from storm,
like streams of water in a dry place,
like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
3And the eyes of those who see shall not be shut,
and the ears of those who hear shall listen attentively.
4And the heart of the rash shall understand knowledge,
and the tongue of the stammering shall hasten to speak clearly.
5The fool shall no longer be called noble,
and the scoundrel shall not be called honorable.
6For the fool speaks folly,
and his heart works iniquity,
to practice ungodliness
and to speak error against YHWH,
to leave empty the soul of the hungry,
and the drink of the thirsty he withholds.
7And the scoundrel — his implements are evil;
he counsels evil plans
to destroy the afflicted with words of falsehood,
even when the needy speaks justice.
8But the noble counsels noble things,
and upon noble things he shall stand.
9Women at ease, rise up, hear my voice!
Trusting daughters, give ear to my speech!
10In little more than a year you shall tremble, trusting ones,
for the vintage fails;
the gathering shall not come.
11Tremble, you women at ease!
Be agitated, trusting ones!
Strip and make yourselves bare,
and gird upon the loins.
12Upon the breasts, beating,
for the pleasant fields,
for the fruitful vine.
13Upon the ground of my people, thorn and brier shall come up,
indeed, upon all the houses of joy,
the jubilant city.
14For the palace is forsaken,
the tumult of the city is abandoned;
the hill and the watchtower become dens forever,
a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks,
15Until the spirit is poured upon us from on high,
and the wilderness becomes garden-land,
and the garden-land is reckoned as forest.
16And justice shall dwell in the wilderness,
and righteousness in the garden-land shall sit.
17And the work of righteousness shall be peace,
and the effect of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
18And my people shall dwell in a habitation of peace,
and in dwellings of trust,
and in resting-places of quietness.
19And it shall hail when the forest comes down,
and in utter lowliness shall the city be laid low.
20Blessed are you who sow beside all waters,
who send out the foot of the ox and the donkey.
