The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 14
1For YHWH shall have compassion on Jacob,
and shall yet choose Israel,
and shall set them upon their land;
and the sojourner shall join himself to them,
and they shall attach themselves to the house of Jacob.
2And peoples shall take them
and bring them to their place;
and the house of Israel shall take them as an inheritance
upon the land of YHWH,
as menservants and as maidservants;
and they shall be captors of their captors,
and they shall rule over their oppressors.
3And it shall be in the day YHWH gives you rest
from your pain, and from your turmoil,
and from the hard labor which was worked upon you,
4— that you shall take up this taunt against the king of Babylon
and say:
How the oppressor has ceased!
The raging has ceased!
5YHWH has broken the staff of the wicked,
the rod of rulers,
6— striking peoples in overflowing wrath,
a striking without ceasing;
ruling nations in anger,
a persecution without restraint.
7The whole earth rests, is quiet;
they break forth into singing.
8Even the cypresses rejoice over you,
the cedars of Lebanon:
"Since you have lain down,
no feller comes up against us."
9Sheol beneath is stirred up for you,
to meet your coming;
rousing the shades for you,
all the leaders of the earth;
raising from their thrones
all the kings of nations.
10All of them shall answer and say to you:
"Even you have been made weak like us!
To us you have become like!"
11Brought down to Sheol is your pride,
the sound of your harps;
beneath you maggots are spread,
and worms are your covering.
12How you have fallen from the heavens,
Shining One, Son of the Dawn!
You have been cut down to the earth,
you who laid low nations!
13But you, you said in your heart:
"To the heavens I will ascend!
Above the stars of God I will raise my throne!
And I will sit on the mountain of assembly,
in the recesses of the north!
14I will ascend above the heights of the cloud!
I will make myself like the Most High!"
15But — to Sheol you shall be brought down,
to the recesses of the pit.
16Those who see you shall gaze at you,
they shall consider you closely:
"Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
who shook kingdoms,
17who made the world like a wilderness,
and its cities he tore down,
his prisoners he did not open homeward?"
18All the kings of nations, all of them,
lie in glory, each in his house;
19but you, you are cast out from your grave,
like an abhorred branch;
clothed with the slain,
the pierced of the sword,
who go down to the stones of the pit,
like a trampled corpse.
20You shall not be joined with them in burial,
for your land you destroyed,
your people you slew.
Never shall the seed of evildoers be named.
21Prepare for his sons a slaughter,
for the iniquity of their fathers!
Lest they arise and possess the earth,
and fill the face of the world with cities.
22"And I will rise against them"
declares YHWH of hosts,
"and I will cut off from Babylon
name and remnant,
and offspring and posterity"
declares YHWH.
23"And I will make her a possession of the hedgehog,
and pools of water;
and I will sweep her with the broom of destruction"
declares YHWH of hosts.
24YHWH of hosts has sworn, saying:
"Surely, as I have thought, so it shall be;
and as I have purposed, it shall stand,
25— to break Assyria in my land,
and upon my mountains I will trample him;
and his yoke shall depart from upon them,
and his burden from upon his shoulder shall depart."
26This is the counsel that is counseled upon all the earth,
and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
27For YHWH of hosts has purposed,
and who shall annul it?
And His hand is the one stretched out,
and who shall turn it back?
28In the year of the death of King Ahaz came this burden:
29Do not rejoice, Philistia, all of you,
that the rod of your striker is broken;
for from the root of a serpent shall come forth a viper,
and its fruit — a flying fiery serpent.
30And the firstborn of the poor shall graze,
and the needy shall lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
and your remnant he shall slay.
31Wail, gate! Cry out, city!
Melt away, Philistia, all of you!
For from the north smoke comes,
and there is no straggler in his ranks.
32And what shall one answer the messengers of a nation?
That YHWH has founded Zion,
and in her the afflicted of His people shall take refuge.
