The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 1
1The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2Hear, O heavens,
and give ear, O earth,
for YHWH has spoken:
"Children I have reared
and raised up,
but they have rebelled against me."
3An ox knows its owner,
and a donkey the manger of its master,
Israel does not know,
my people does not consider.
4Woe! Sinful nation,
people heavy of iniquity,
seed of evildoers,
children who deal corruptly!
They have forsaken YHWH,
they have spurned the Holy One of Israel,
they are estranged backward.
5Upon what shall you be struck still more?
You continue turning aside!
Every head is for sickness,
and every heart is faint.
6From the sole of foot and unto the head
there is no soundness in it,
wound and bruise
and fresh blow:
they have not been pressed out
and they have not been bound up
and it has not been softened with oil.
7Your land — desolation,
your cities — burned with fire;
your ground — before you,
strangers are devouring it,
and desolation — like the overthrow of strangers.
8And the daughter of Zion is left
like a booth in a vineyard,
like a lodge in a cucumber field,
like a city besieged.
9Unless YHWH of hosts
had left to us a survivor — a little,
like Sodom we would have become,
to Gomorrah we would have been like.
10Hear the word of YHWH,
rulers of Sodom!
Give ear to the torah of our God,
people of Gomorrah!
11"What to me is the abundance of your sacrifices?"
says YHWH.
"I am sated with burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of fatlings;
and in blood of bulls and lambs
and he-goats — I do not delight.
12When you come to appear before my face,
who has sought this from your hand:
trampling my courts?
13Do not continue to bring
a grain-offering of emptiness,
incense: it is an abomination to me.
New moon and sabbath, the calling of assembly,
I cannot endure iniquity and solemn gathering.
14Your new moons and your appointed feasts
my soul hates;
they have become upon me a burden,
I am weary of bearing them.
15And when you spread out your palms,
I will hide my eyes from you;
even when you multiply prayer,
I am not hearing,
your hands are full of blood.
16Wash yourselves! Make yourselves clean!
Remove the evil of your deeds
from before my eyes!
Cease doing evil!
17Learn to do good!
Seek justice!
Set right the oppressed!
Defend the orphan!
Plead for the widow!
18Come now, and let us reason together,"
says YHWH.
"Though your sins are as scarlet,
as snow they shall be white;
though they are red as crimson,
as wool they shall be.
19If you are willing and hear,
the good of the land you shall eat;
20but if you refuse and rebel,
by the sword you shall be eaten",
for the mouth of YHWH has spoken.
21How she has become a harlot,
a faithful city!
Full of justice,
righteousness lodged in her,
but now, murderers.
22Your silver has become dross,
your drink diluted with water.
23Your rulers are rebels
and companions of thieves;
every one loves a bribe
and chases after payments.
The orphan they do not defend,
and the cause of the widow
does not come before them.
24Therefore, declares the Lord,
YHWH of hosts,
the Mighty One of Israel:
"Woe! I will relieve myself from my adversaries,
and I will avenge myself from my enemies.
25And I will turn back my hand upon you,
and I will smelt as with lye your dross,
and I will remove all your alloy.
26And I will restore your judges as at the first,
and your counselors as at the beginning.
After that you shall be called
city of righteousness,
faithful city."
27Zion shall be redeemed by justice,
and her returning ones by righteousness.
28And the shattering of rebels and sinners together,
and those who forsake YHWH shall be consumed.
29For they shall be ashamed because of the terebinths
which you desired,
and you shall be disgraced because of the gardens
which you chose.
30For you shall be like a terebinth
withering its leaf,
and like a garden
which has no water for it.
31And the strong one shall become as tow,
and his work as a spark;
and both of them shall burn together,
and there is none quenching.
