The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 47

1Come down and sit upon the dust,
O virgin daughter of Babylon!
Sit on the ground — there is no throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For they shall no longer call you
tender and delicate.
2Take millstones and grind flour!
Remove your veil!
Strip off the train, uncover the leg,
cross over rivers!
3Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
indeed your reproach shall be seen.
Vengeance I will take,
and I will not spare a man.
4Our Redeemer — YHWH of hosts is His name,
the Holy One of Israel.
5Sit in silence and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For they shall no longer call you
mistress of kingdoms.
6I was angry with my people,
I profaned my inheritance,
and I gave them into your hand.
You did not show them compassion;
upon the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy.
7And you said, "Forever I shall be mistress!"
So that you did not set these things upon your heart;
you did not remember its outcome.
8And now, hear this, O luxurious one,
the one sitting in security,
the one saying in her heart,
"I, and there is none besides me!
I shall not sit as a widow,
and I shall not know bereavement."
9And these two things shall come to you
in a moment, in one day:
bereavement and widowhood!
In their fullness they shall come upon you,
despite the multitude of your sorceries,
despite the great power of your enchantments.
10And you trusted in your wickedness;
you said, "There is none who sees me."
Your wisdom and your knowledge,
it has led you astray.
And you said in your heart,
"I, and there is none besides me."
11And evil shall come upon you,
you shall not know its dawning.
And ruin shall fall upon you,
you shall not be able to atone for it.
And devastation shall come upon you suddenly,
you shall not know it.
12Stand now with your enchantments
and with the multitude of your sorceries,
in which you have labored from your youth!
Perhaps you will be able to avail;
perhaps you will cause terror!
13You are wearied by the multitude of your counsels!
Let them stand now and save you,
the dividers of the heavens,
the ones gazing at the stars,
making known at the new moons
what shall come upon you!
14Behold, they have become like stubble;
fire has burned them.
They shall not deliver themselves
from the power of the flame.
There is no coal to warm oneself,
no fire to sit before.
15Thus they are to you — those with whom you have labored,
your traders from your youth:
each to his own direction they wander.
There is none saving you.
