The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 50
1Thus says YHWH:
Where is this document of divorce of your mother
with which I sent her away?
Or who is among my creditors
to whom I sold you?
Behold, for your iniquities you were sold,
and for your transgressions
your mother was sent away.
2Why did I come, and there was no man?
I called, and there was none answering?
Is my hand indeed too short to ransom?
Or is there no strength in me to deliver?
Behold, by my rebuke I dry up the sea;
I make rivers a wilderness.
Their fish stink for lack of water
and die of thirst.
3I clothe the heavens in blackness,
and sackcloth I make their covering.
4The Lord YHWH has given me the tongue of disciples,
to know how to sustain the weary with a word.
He wakens, morning by morning;
He wakens for me an ear
to hear as disciples do.
5The Lord YHWH has opened my ear,
and I did not rebel;
backward I did not turn.
6My back I gave to the smiters,
and my cheeks to those who pluck out the beard.
My face I did not hide
from shame and spitting.
7And the Lord YHWH helps me;
therefore I was not humiliated.
Therefore I set my face like flint,
and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
8Near is the one who vindicates me!
Who will contend with me? Let us stand together!
Who is the master of my case? Let him draw near to me!
9Behold, the Lord YHWH helps me!
Who is he that will declare me guilty?
Behold, all of them shall wear out like a garment;
a moth shall consume them.
10Who among you fears YHWH,
hears the voice of His servant?
He who walks in darkness
and has no brightness,
let him trust in the name of YHWH
and lean upon his God.
11Behold, all of you kindlers of fire,
those who arm yourselves with firebrands,
walk in the light of your fire,
and among the firebrands you have kindled!
From my hand this has come to you:
in torment you shall lie down.
