The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 54

1Sing, O barren one, who has not given birth;
break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not travailed;
for more are the children of the desolate one
than the children of the married one, says YHWH.
2Enlarge the place of your tent,
and the curtains of your dwellings let them stretch out;
do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
and your stakes make strong.
3For to the right and to the left you shall spread abroad,
and your seed shall dispossess nations,
and desolate cities they shall settle.
4Do not fear, for you shall not be put to shame;
and do not be humiliated, for you shall not be disgraced;
for the shame of your youth you shall forget,
and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.
5For your husband is your Maker,
YHWH of hosts is His name;
and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
the God of all the earth He shall be called.
6For like a woman forsaken and grieved of spirit
YHWH has called you,
even a wife of youth, when she is rejected,
says your God.
7For a brief moment I forsook you,
but with great compassion I will gather you.
8In a surge of wrath I hid my face
for a moment from you,
but with everlasting steadfast love I have had compassion on you,
says your Redeemer, YHWH.
9For the waters of Noah this is to me:
as I swore that the waters of Noah
would not pass over the earth again,
so I have sworn not to be wrathful against you
and not to rebuke you.
10For the mountains may depart
and the hills may totter,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not totter,
says the one having compassion on you — YHWH.
11O afflicted one, storm-tossed, not comforted,
behold, I am setting your stones in antimony,
and I will lay your foundations with sapphires.
12And I will make your pinnacles of ruby,
and your gates of fiery stones,
and all your border of precious stones.
13And all your children shall be taught of YHWH,
and great shall be the peace of your children.
14In righteousness you shall be established;
be far from oppression, for you shall not fear,
and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15Behold, if anyone indeed attacks,
it is not from me;
whoever attacks you
shall fall because of you.
16Behold, I have created the smith
who blows in a fire of coals
and brings out a weapon for its work;
and I have created the destroyer to destroy.
17Every weapon formed against you shall not prosper,
and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn.
This is the inheritance of the servants of YHWH,
and their righteousness is from me, declares YHWH.
