The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 59

1Behold, the hand of YHWH is not short from saving,
and His ear is not heavy from hearing.
2But rather your iniquities have been making a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden His face from you
from hearing.
3For your palms are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken falsehood,
your tongue mutters injustice.
4No one calls in righteousness,
and no one litigates in faithfulness.
Trusting in emptiness and speaking vanity,
conceiving trouble and bringing forth iniquity.
5Eggs of the viper they have hatched,
and webs of the spider they weave.
The one who eats from their eggs dies,
and what is crushed hatches out a serpent.
6Their webs shall not become a garment,
and they shall not cover themselves with their works.
Their works are works of iniquity,
and the deed of violence is in their palms.
7Their feet run to evil,
and they hasten to shed innocent blood.
Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
devastation and destruction are in their highways.
8The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths.
Their paths they have made crooked for themselves;
everyone who walks in it does not know peace.
9Therefore justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us.
We wait for light, and behold, darkness!
For brightness — in gloom we walk.
10We grope like the blind along a wall,
and like those with no eyes we grope.
We stumble at the noonday as in the twilight,
among the vigorous like the dead.
11We growl like bears, all of us,
and like doves we truly moan.
We wait for justice, and there is none;
for salvation, it is far from us.
12For our transgressions are many before you,
and our sins have testified against us.
For our transgressions are with us,
and our iniquities, we know them:
13Rebelling and denying YHWH,
and turning back from behind our God,
speaking oppression and rebellion,
conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
14And justice is driven back,
and righteousness stands far off.
For truth has stumbled in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15And truth has become absent,
and he who turns from evil becomes prey.
And YHWH saw,
and it was evil in His eyes that there is no justice.
16And He saw that there is no man,
and He was appalled that there is no one who intercedes.
And His arm saved for Him,
and His righteousness, it sustained Him.
17And He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
and a helmet of salvation upon His head.
And He put on garments of vengeance as clothing,
and wrapped Himself in zeal as a cloak.
18According to deeds, accordingly He shall repay,
fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies;
to the coastlands He shall repay recompense.
19And they shall fear from the west the name of YHWH,
and from the rising of the sun His glory.
For He shall come like a rushing stream,
which the spirit of YHWH drives.
20And a Redeemer shall come to Zion,
and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,
declares YHWH.
21"And as for me, this is my covenant with them," says YHWH:
"My spirit that is upon you,
and my words that I have placed in your mouth,
they shall not depart from your mouth,
nor from the mouth of your seed,
nor from the mouth of your seed's seed,"
says YHWH, "from now and until forever."
