The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 66
1Thus says YHWH:
"The heavens are my throne,
and the earth the footstool of my feet.
Where is the house you would build for me?
And where is the place of my rest?
2And all these things my hand has made,
and all these things came to be," declares YHWH.
"But to this one I will look:
to the afflicted and contrite of spirit,
and the one who trembles at my word."
3"The one who slaughters an ox — strikes down a man;
the one who sacrifices a lamb — breaks a dog's neck;
the one who offers a grain-offering — swine's blood;
the one who burns frankincense as memorial — blesses an idol.
Indeed, they have chosen their own ways,
and in their abominations their soul delights.
4So I also will choose their caprices,
and what they dread I will bring upon them,
because I called and no one answered,
I spoke and they did not listen,
and they did what was evil in my eyes,
and what I did not delight in they chose."
5Hear the word of YHWH,
you who tremble at His word!
"Your brothers who hate you,
who cast you out for my name's sake, said:
'Let YHWH be glorified,
that we may see your joy!'
But they shall be ashamed."
6A sound of uproar from the city!
A sound from the temple!
The sound of YHWH
repaying recompense to His enemies!
7Before she was in labor, she gave birth;
before birth-pain came to her,
she delivered a male child.
8Who has heard such a thing?
Who has seen such things?
Can a land be brought forth in one day?
Can a nation be born at once?
For Zion was in labor
and also gave birth to her children.
9"Shall I bring to the point of birth
and not cause to bring forth?" says YHWH.
"Shall I, the one who causes birth,
shut [the womb]?" says your God.
10Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad in her,
all who love her!
Exult with her in exultation,
all who mourn over her,
11that you may nurse and be satisfied
from the breast of her consolations,
that you may drink deeply and delight
from the abundance of her glory.
12For thus says YHWH:
"Behold, I am extending to her like a river — peace,
and like an overflowing stream — the glory of nations.
And you shall nurse;
upon the hip you shall be carried,
and upon knees you shall be dandled.
13As one whom his mother comforts,
so I will comfort you,
and in Jerusalem you shall be comforted."
14And you shall see, and your heart shall rejoice,
and your bones shall flourish like grass.
And the hand of YHWH shall be known to His servants,
and He shall be indignant against His enemies.
15For behold, YHWH comes in fire,
and like the storm are His chariots,
to return His anger in wrath,
and His rebuke in flames of fire.
16For by fire YHWH enters into judgment,
and by His sword, with all flesh.
And many shall be the slain of YHWH.
17"Those who consecrate themselves and purify themselves
to go into the gardens,
after one in the midst,
eating the flesh of swine and the abomination and the mouse,
together they shall come to an end," declares YHWH.
18"And I — their works and their thoughts,
it is coming to gather all the nations and tongues,
and they shall come and see my glory.
19And I will set a sign among them,
and I will send survivors from them to the nations,
to Tarshish, Put, and Lud, drawers of the bow,
to Tubal and Javan,
to the distant coastlands
that have not heard my report
and have not seen my glory,
and they shall declare my glory among the nations.
20And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations
as an offering to YHWH,
on horses and in chariots, and in litters and on mules
and on dromedaries,
to my holy mountain Jerusalem," says YHWH,
"as the sons of Israel bring the grain-offering
in a clean vessel to the house of YHWH.
21And even from them I will take as priests,
as Levites," says YHWH.
22"For as the new heavens and the new earth
which I am making
stand before me," declares YHWH,
"so shall your seed and your name stand.
23And it shall be, from new moon to new moon,
and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me," says YHWH.
24"And they shall go out and see
the corpses of the men who rebelled against me,
for their worm shall not die,
and their fire shall not be quenched,
and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh."
