The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 33
1Woe, destroyer, and you not destroyed,
and treacherous one, and they have not betrayed against him!
When you finish destroying, you shall be destroyed;
when you cease betraying, they shall betray against you.
2YHWH, be gracious to us; for You we wait.
Be their arm every morning,
indeed our salvation in the time of distress.
3At the sound of tumult, peoples flee;
at Your exaltation, nations scatter.
4And your spoil shall be gathered, the gathering of the locust;
like the rushing of locusts, rushing upon it.
5YHWH is exalted, for He dwells on high;
He fills Zion with justice and righteousness.
6And the stability of your times shall be
an abundance of salvations, wisdom and knowledge;
the fear of YHWH, it is His treasure.
7Behold, their valiant ones cry out in the street;
envoys of peace weep bitterly.
8Highways lie desolate, the wayfarer ceases.
He has broken a covenant, he despises cities,
he does not regard man.
9The land mourns, it languishes;
Lebanon is put to shame, it withers;
the Sharon has become like the desert-plain,
and Bashan and Carmel shake off leaves.
10"Now I will arise," says YHWH;
"now I will be exalted;
now I will be lifted up."
11You conceive chaff, you bring forth stubble;
your breath is fire — it shall devour you.
12And peoples shall become burnings of lime;
thorns cut down, in fire they are set ablaze.
13Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
and know, you who are near, my might.
14Sinners in Zion dread;
trembling seizes the profane:
"Who among us can dwell with devouring fire?
Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?"
15He who walks in righteousness and speaks uprightly,
who refuses oppressive gain,
who shakes his hands from holding a bribe,
who stops his ear from hearing of blood,
and shuts his eyes from seeing evil,
16He shall dwell on the heights;
rock-fortresses are his stronghold.
His bread is given;
his waters are sure.
17Your eyes shall behold the King in His beauty;
they shall see a land stretching far.
18Your heart shall muse upon terror:
"Where is the counter? Where is the weigher?
Where is the counter of towers?"
19The fierce people you shall not see,
a people of obscure speech beyond comprehension,
of stammering tongue without understanding.
20Look upon Zion, city of our appointed feasts!
Your eyes shall see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation,
a tent not moved,
its stakes never pulled up,
and all its cords never broken.
21But there YHWH in majesty shall be for us,
a place of rivers, of broad streams;
no galley shall go in it,
and no mighty ship shall pass through it.
22For YHWH is our judge,
YHWH is our lawgiver,
YHWH is our king,
He will save us.
23Your rigging is loosened;
they do not hold firm the base of their mast;
they do not spread a sail.
Then abundant spoil is divided;
the lame plunder prey.
24And no inhabitant shall say, "I am sick";
the people dwelling in it are forgiven iniquity.
