The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 42

1Behold my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom my soul delights.
I have put my spirit upon him;
justice to the nations he shall bring forth.
2He shall not cry out, and he shall not lift up [his voice],
and he shall not make his voice heard in the street.
3A bruised reed he shall not break,
and a flickering wick he shall not quench.
In faithfulness he shall bring forth justice.
4He shall not grow dim, and he shall not be crushed,
until he establishes justice in the earth.
And for his torah the coastlands shall wait.
5Thus says the God, YHWH,
who creates the heavens and stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth and its offspring,
who gives breath to the people upon it,
and spirit to those who walk on it:
6I am YHWH;
I have called you in righteousness,
and I grasp you by the hand,
and I keep you,
and I give you as a covenant for the people,
as a light for the nations,
7to open blind eyes,
to bring out the prisoner from the dungeon,
from the prison-house those who sit in darkness.
8I am YHWH — that is my name!
And my glory to another I will not give,
and my praise to graven images.
9The former things — behold, they have come to pass.
And new things I declare;
before they spring forth I cause you to hear them.
10Sing to YHWH a new song,
his praise from the end of the earth!
Those who go down to the sea and its fullness,
coastlands and their inhabitants!
11Let the wilderness and its cities lift up [their voice],
the villages where Kedar dwells!
Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy,
from the top of the mountains let them shout!
12Let them give YHWH glory,
and his praise in the coastlands let them declare!
13YHWH goes forth like a warrior,
like a man of battles he stirs up zeal.
He raises the battle cry, indeed he cries out;
against his enemies he shows himself mighty.
14I have been silent from of old,
I have kept still, I have restrained myself.
Like a woman in labor I gasp,
I pant and I gasp together.
15I will lay waste mountains and hills,
and all their vegetation I will dry up.
And I will make rivers into dry islands,
and pools I will dry up.
16And I will lead the blind by a way they do not know;
in paths they do not know I will guide them.
I will make the darkness before them into light,
and the crooked places into level ground.
These are the things I have done,
and I have not forsaken them.
17They are turned back, they shall be utterly put to shame,
those who trust in a graven image,
those who say to a molten image, "You are our gods."
18Hear, you deaf!
And look, you blind, that you may see!
19Who is blind but my servant,
and deaf like my messenger whom I send?
Who is blind like the dedicated one,
and blind like the servant of YHWH?
20Seeing many things, but you do not keep [them];
opening ears, but he does not hear.
21YHWH is pleased, for the sake of his righteousness,
to magnify torah and make it glorious.
22But it is a people plundered and despoiled,
all of them trapped in holes,
and in prison-houses they are hidden.
They have become plunder, and there is none who delivers;
spoil, and none says, "Restore!"
23Who among you will give ear to this,
will pay attention and hear for the time to come?
24Who gave Jacob for spoil,
and Israel to plunderers?
Was it not YHWH, against whom we have sinned?
And they were not willing to walk in his ways,
and they did not listen to his torah.
25And he poured out upon him the fury of his anger,
and the fierceness of war.
And it blazed upon him all around, but he did not know;
and it burned on him, but he did not take it to heart.
