The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 22

1Burden of the Valley of Vision,
What is it with you then,
that you have gone up, all of you, to the rooftops?
2Full of uproar,
a roaring city, an exultant town,
your slain are not slain of the sword,
and not dead of battle.
3All your rulers fled together,
without a bow they were bound;
all those found of you were bound together,
from afar they had fled.
4Therefore I said:
"Look away from me,
let me weep bitterly.
Do not press to comfort me
over the destruction of the daughter of my people."
5For a day of tumult and trampling and confusion
belongs to the Lord YHWH of hosts
in the Valley of Vision,
tearing down a wall,
and a cry toward the mountain.
6And Elam lifted up a quiver,
with chariots of men, horsemen,
and Kir uncovered the shield.
7And the choicest of your valleys were filled with chariots,
and the horsemen firmly set themselves toward the gate.
8And he removed the covering of Judah,
and you looked in that day
to the weaponry of the House of the Forest.
9And the breaches of the city of David you saw,
that they were many,
and you gathered the waters of the lower pool.
10And the houses of Jerusalem you counted,
and you tore down the houses to fortify the wall.
11And a reservoir you made between the two walls
for the waters of the old pool,
but you did not look to Him who made it,
and Him who fashioned it from long ago you did not see.
12And the Lord YHWH of hosts called in that day
for weeping and for mourning
and for baldness and for girding on sackcloth.
13And behold, gladness and joy,
killing cattle and slaughtering sheep,
eating flesh and drinking wine,
"Let us eat and let us drink, for tomorrow we die!"
14And it was revealed in my ears — YHWH of hosts:
"Surely this iniquity shall not be atoned for you
until you die",
utterance of the Lord YHWH of hosts.
15Thus says the Lord YHWH of hosts:
"Go, enter unto this steward,
concerning Shebna, who is over the house:
16What do you have here, and whom do you have here,
that you have hewn out for yourself here a tomb,
O you who hew on high his tomb,
who carve in the rock a dwelling for himself?"
17Behold, YHWH is hurling you a hurling, O man,
and wrapping you up tightly.
18Winding He will wind you like a ball
into a land broad on both sides,
there you will die,
and there your chariots of glory,
disgrace of the house of your lord.
19And I will thrust you from your station,
and from your standing He will tear you down.
20And it shall be in that day,
I will call my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
21And I will clothe him with your tunic,
and your sash I will fasten on him,
and your authority I will give into his hand.
And he shall be as a father
to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22And I will place the key of the house of David upon his shoulder,
he opens and none shuts,
he shuts and none opens.
23And I will drive him in as a peg in a sure place,
and he shall be a throne of glory for the house of his father.
24And they shall hang upon him all the glory of the house of his father,
the offspring and the offshoots,
all the small vessels,
from the bowls to all the jars.
25"In that day" utterance of YHWH of hosts,
"the peg driven in the sure place shall give way,
and it shall be cut off and fall,
and the load that was upon it shall be cut off",
for YHWH has spoken.
