The Book of Isaiah
Chapter 3
1For behold, the Lord, YHWH of hosts,
is removing from Jerusalem and from Judah
support and support,
every support of bread
and every support of water:
2mighty one and man of war,
judge and prophet,
and diviner and elder,
3captain of fifty and one lifted of face,
and counselor and skilled one of craftsmen,
and one discerning of whisper.
4And I will give youths as their rulers,
and caprice-workers shall rule over them.
5And the people shall be oppressed,
man against man
and man against his neighbor;
the youth shall act arrogantly against the elder,
and the despised one against the honored one.
6For a man shall seize his brother,
of his father's house:
"A cloak! Come,
commander you shall be for us,
and this ruin under your hand."
7He shall lift up [his voice] in that day, saying:
"I will not be one who binds up,
and in my house there is no bread
and there is no cloak,
you shall not make me commander of the people."
8For Jerusalem has stumbled,
and Judah has fallen;
for their tongue and their deeds are against YHWH,
to provoke the eyes of His glory.
9The expression of their faces testifies against them,
and their sin — like Sodom they have declared;
they have not concealed it.
Alas for their soul!
For they have dealt to themselves evil.
10Say of the righteous that it is good,
for the fruit of their deeds they shall eat.
11Alas for the wicked — evil!
For the recompense of his hands shall be done to him.
12My people — his oppressors are a child,
and women rule over him.
My people — those who lead you cause you to err,
and the way of your paths they have swallowed up.
13YHWH takes His stand to contend,
and stands to judge peoples.
14YHWH shall enter into justice
with the elders of His people and his rulers:
"And you, you have consumed the vineyard;
the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
15What is it to you that you crush my people,
and the faces of the poor you grind?"
declares the Lord YHWH of hosts.
16And YHWH said: "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,
and they walk with outstretched neck and wanton of eyes,
walking and mincing they walk,
and with their feet they jingle —"
17And the Lord will make scabby the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion,
and YHWH — their secret parts he will lay bare.
18In that day the Lord will remove the finery of the anklets, and the headbands, and the crescents,
19the pendants, and the bracelets, and the veils,
20the headdresses, and the armlets, and the sashes,
and the perfume boxes, and the amulets,
21the signet rings, and the nose rings,
22the festal robes, and the mantles, and the cloaks, and the purses,
23and the mirrors, and the linen garments, and the turbans, and the shawls.
24And it shall be: instead of perfume — rottenness there shall be;
and instead of a sash — a rope;
and instead of well-set hair — baldness;
and instead of a rich robe — a girding of sackcloth;
branding instead of beauty.
25Your men by the sword shall fall,
and your might in war.
26And her gates shall lament and mourn;
and emptied out, upon the ground she shall sit.
