The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 28

1Woe! Crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim,
and the fading flower of the beauty of his splendor,
which is upon the head of the valley of fatnesses,
those struck down by wine.
2Behold, a strong and mighty one belonging to the Lord,
like a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction,
like a storm of mighty, flooding waters,
he casts down to the earth by hand.
3By feet shall be trampled
the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim.
4And the fading flower of the beauty of his splendor,
which is upon the head of the valley of fatnesses,
shall be like a first-ripe fig before summer,
which the one who sees it sees,
while it is still in his palm,
he swallows it.
5In that day YHWH of hosts shall be
for a crown of beauty
and for a diadem of splendor
for the remnant of his people,
6and for a spirit of justice
for the one who sits upon the judgment,
and for strength
to those who drive back war to the gate.
7And even these, with wine they stagger,
and with strong drink they wander.
Priest and prophet, they stagger with strong drink,
they are swallowed up by wine,
they wander from strong drink.
They stagger in vision,
they stumble in judgment.
8For all tables are full of vomit, filth,
without a place.
9To whom would he teach knowledge?
And to whom would he explain the message?
Those weaned from milk,
those taken from the breasts?
10For it is tsav latsav, tsav latsav,
qav laqav, qav laqav,
a little there, a little there.
11For with stammering of lip
and with another tongue
he will speak to this people,
12— the one who said to them,
"This is the rest — give rest to the weary,
and this is the repose",
but they were not willing to hear.
13And the word of YHWH shall be to them:
tsav latsav, tsav latsav,
qav laqav, qav laqav,
a little there, a little there,
so that they will go and stumble backward,
and be broken,
and be snared,
and be captured.
14Therefore hear the word of YHWH,
men of scoffing,
rulers of this people who are in Jerusalem.
15For you have said,
"We have made a covenant with death,
and with Sheol we have made an agreement.
The overwhelming scourge, when it passes through,
shall not come to us,
for we have made lies our refuge,
and in falsehood we have hidden ourselves."
16Therefore thus says the Lord YHWH:
"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone,
a sure foundation.
The one who believes shall not be in haste."
17And I will make justice the measuring-line,
and righteousness the plumb-line.
And hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies,
and the hiding-place — waters shall flood.
18And your covenant with death shall be annulled,
and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand.
The overwhelming scourge, when it passes through,
you shall be to it for a trampling.
19As often as it passes through, it shall take you,
for morning by morning it passes through,
by day and by night.
And it shall be sheer terror
to understand the message.
20For the bed is too short to stretch out on,
and the covering is too narrow to wrap oneself in.
21For as at Mount Perazim YHWH shall rise up,
as in the valley of Gibeon He shall be stirred to action,
to do His work — strange is His work,
and to perform His task — alien is His task.
22And now, do not scoff,
lest your bonds be tightened.
For a destruction, and one that is determined,
I have heard
from the Lord YHWH of hosts,
upon all the earth.
23Give ear and hear my voice!
Pay attention and hear my speech!
24Does the plowman plow all day long to sow?
Does he continually open and harrow his ground?
25Does he not, when he has leveled its surface,
scatter black cumin,
and cumin he casts,
and he sets wheat in rows,
and barley in its appointed place,
and spelt at its border?
26And He instructs him in the right manner,
his God teaches him.
27For black cumin is not threshed with a threshing-sledge,
and the wheel of a cart upon cumin is not turned,
but with a stick black cumin is beaten,
and cumin with a rod.
28Bread-grain is crushed,
but not forever does he thresh it.
And he drives the wheel of his cart
and his horses,
he does not crush it.
29This also comes forth from YHWH of hosts,
He is wonderful in counsel,
He magnifies wisdom.
