The Book of Isaiah

Chapter 57

1The righteous one perishes,
and no one takes it to heart;
and men of steadfast love are gathered,
with no one understanding
that from before the evil the righteous one is gathered.
2He enters into peace;
they rest upon their resting-places,
whoever walks in his uprightness.
3But you — come near here,
sons of a sorceress,
seed of an adulterer and she who plays the harlot!
4Against whom do you make sport?
Against whom do you open wide the mouth,
stick out the tongue?
Are you not children of transgression,
seed of falsehood?
5You who inflame yourselves among the terebinths,
under every green tree,
who slaughter the children in the valleys,
under the clefts of the rocks,
6among the smooth stones of the wadi is your portion;
they, they are your lot.
Even to them you have poured out a libation,
you have offered up a grain offering.
Shall I relent concerning these things?
7Upon a high and lofty mountain
you have set your bed;
even there you went up
to offer sacrifice.
8And behind the door and the doorpost
you have set your symbol;
for away from me you have uncovered yourself
and gone up; you have made your bed wide,
and you have made a pact with them;
you loved their bed, you gazed upon a hand.
9You journeyed to the king with oil,
and you multiplied your perfumes;
you sent your envoys far away,
and you descended as far as Sheol.
10In the length of your way you grew weary,
you did not say, "It is hopeless!"
You found a renewal of your strength;
therefore you did not grow weak.
11And of whom were you anxious and afraid,
that you were false,
and me you did not remember,
you did not lay it upon your heart?
Have I not been silent, and for a long time?
Yet me you do not fear.
12I will declare your "righteousness"
and your works, and they shall not profit you.
13When you cry out, let your gathered idols deliver you!
But all of them the wind shall carry away,
a breath shall take them.
But he who takes refuge in me shall inherit the land
and shall possess my holy mountain.
14And He says: "Build up, build up! Prepare the way!
Remove the stumbling-block from the way of my people."
15For thus says the high and lifted up One,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy:
"On high and in holiness I dwell,
and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite."
16For not forever will I contend,
and not perpetually will I be wrathful;
for the spirit would faint before me,
and the breaths-of-life — I have made them.
17Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was wrathful,
and I struck him, hiding my face, and I was wrathful;
but he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.
18I have seen his ways, and I will heal him;
I will lead him and restore comforts
to him and to his mourners.
19Creating the fruit of the lips:
"Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,"
says YHWH, "and I will heal him."
20But the wicked are like the tossing sea,
for it cannot be quiet;
its waters cast up mire and mud.
21"There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."
